This week brings an exciting development in one of Berkeley's favorite coffee hideouts, Local 123. As of last week, the café is now roasting its own. The café began as a multiroaster coffee house in 2009, serving Flying Goat, Sightglass, Coava, and Barefoot, later going exclusive with Four Barrel. Now, Keith Gerhke (Able Brewing, Coava) will be roasting the café's coffee out of his space in Pacheco.

Live Roasting at Artis, Is It Worth It?

The partnership between Gerhke and the café is an old and tightly braided one that started when Gerhke was a roaster at Flying Goat, continuing on through his time at Coava and through the launch of his company Able Brewing, whose metal Kone filters are the pourover equipment of choice at Local 123. The café's first espresso -- titled Union Blend, as a nod to the building's history as a local painters' union -- is a mix of beans from Brazil, Colombia, Honduras, and Ethiopia. Available drip options include Nicaraguan, Colombian, Honduran, and Ethiopian. The café has also lately moved toward making more of its own pastries in house, and now nearly everything but the Pepples Donuts and Starter Bakery's Kouign Amann are made on the premises. Think cookies (chocolate chip, dark chocolate sea salt, ginger), scones, bran and berry muffins, and more.

In other news, Blue Bottle unveiled the look of its forthcoming packaged version of its New Orleans iced coffee this week. The popular brew is a blend of cold-brewed coffee (brewed at Fort Point Brewing Company in the Presidio), roasted chicory, cane sugar, and Clover organic milk. The product will pop up at Northern California Whole Foods later this month, expanding in the future to Blue Bottle shops and more Whole Foods stores on both costs. The package is a very cute blue and white 10.66 ounce milk carton, kind of perfect for a grown-up lunch box, you might say.

After toiling under bureaucratic delay, Andytown is finally opening its doors to the Outer Sunset. On March 22, get your first peak of the place at the café's grand opening party, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Stop by for free coffee and music from Adam Spry.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
