What to Do Tonight For Beer Week: Thursday, February 13

Well, it's still Beer Week. And if you have the stamina to go out for another night of beer tasting, the sudsy fun continues this evening.

You might find yourself at Magnolia, where the Festival of Firkins is going on until 8 p.m. (though by then some of the more special casks might be tapped). A firkin's just a small barrel of beer with a funny name, and the ales at Magnolia today have been cask-conditioned, which means they haven't been carbonated or refrigerated and really let the natural fermentation process take hold -- they're often called "real ales." Anyway there should be about a dozen there today, available in pints or tasting glasses.

The lights are going out at the new Sierra Nevada Torpedo Room in Berkeley for a Tasting in the Dark event ($20; 6-8 p.m.). You'll taste a bunch of beers with a blindfold on for an experience that "challenges your perceptions of various beer styles and yields a more discerning palate."

Homesick Chicagoans should head to Mad Dog in the Fog, where Goose Island will be pouring some of its rare ales -- Bourbon County Stout, Bourbon County Barley Wine, Lolita Sour -- as well as Sofie and Honkers Ale. The brewers will be there, and they come bearing Chicago-style hot dogs with all the fixings.

If you're prepared for things to perhaps get a bit out of hand, scoot over to The Sycamore for Imperial Night (5 p.m.-midnight). The theme is all imperial ales -- stouts, IPAs, wheats, pilsners, saisons -- from around the country. Tonight also marks the release of its FiftyFifty Brewing Imperial Stout series.
