Week in Vegan: Lions, Tigers, and Beyoncé

Posted By on Tue, Dec 10, 2013 at 9:15 AM

  • It feels like we've just finished Thanksgiving, gently pushing our relatives out of our apartments or rushing out of our relatives' houses to catch the soonest flight home, but after a brief respite, the holidays are back again! No matter what you celebrate this season (me: food; presents), you can make them cruelty-free with these 10 tips. Unfortunately, there's no tip on how to stop your well-meaning aunts and grandmas from asking you about your love life again.

  • Huffpo has put together a list of holiday gifts for the discerning vegan. My favorite gift: marshmallows. My least favorite gift: the comments on the post.
  • Many things scare me. One of them is global warning. Over at Salon, David Shirota paints a picture (with words) of what meat consumption costs our environment. Spoiler alert: it's not good, friends.
  • Your fifth grade science teacher was wrong. New research suggests that humans do not sit at the golden throne at the top of the food chain (someone has a throne right?). Instead, we're somewhere in the middle, with orcas closer to the top than us, so maybe don't visit Sea World anymore?
  • Jay Z and Queen Bey are taking on a 22-day vegan challenge. Congratulations, you guys! Like most things in your careers, I hope my approval keeps you going.
  • 'Tis the season to eat as much chocolate as possible. Last week we did bon bons, this week we do guilt-free chocolate candy: delicious vegan Nicobella chocolates. It's actually altruistic to order box after box, because five percent of the profits go to animal welfare organizations, so it's basically uncharitable to not eat a box of these a day. Go on, be selfless.
  • In heartwarming news that's going to get us through the week, a lion, a tiger, and a bear (don't do it!) are living together in an animal sanctuary in Georgia. The friends were living together when they were rescued from the home of a drug dealer and now the group, known collectively as BLT and opening for The Cheetah Girls in 2014, get to spend their time chilling and eating, which is the best any of us can hope for.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
