Peninsula Dining Update: Favorite Modern Latin Restaurant Expands in Redwood City

La Viga, one of Redwood City's favorite destinations for modern Latin cuisine since its opening a year and a half ago, now has its first sibling. Chef Manuel Martinez has unveiled the sleek LV Mar just a few blocks away on downtown's Broadway restaurant row. Not surprisingly with Martinez's reputation as a master of seafood, LV Mar's menu features an aquatic theme. For tapas, there's ceviche mixto and a dish with ahi tuna, pickled vegetables, and aji chile sauce. A short list of entrees and shared plates includes scallops with green rice gratin and lobster bordelaise sauce, pumpkin seed-crusted sea bass, and duck breast with tamarind and prune mole. Dessert offers items like a pear and almond tart with horchata ice cream and smoky-sweet mezcal caramel. Office lunch just got more exciting in Burlingame with the opening of New World Café, which offers a globe-spanning breakfast and lunch menu in the shadow of SFO. Executive chef Jorge Sebastiani's resume covers much the same ground of his menu, having worked in Tokyo, Paris, and most recently as executive chef at Spiedo in San Mateo. In the morning, choose from assorted omelets or jook (Chinese rice soup) served with an onion and dry shrimp rice roll. Lunch brings personal sized pizzas, traditional salads, and sandwiches on house-made bread. But the headliners are the three daily creative "hot lunch specials" like a stuffed chicken leg with risotto, baked tomatoes, and port wine sauce; or peppercorn-crusted rack of lamb with lentils. Not far away from New World Café, a third location of San Mateo's popular Tpumps is open by the Burlingame Caltrain station. Milk teas with boba dominate the menu, where your many subsequent choices include settling on green or black tea, various flavors ranging from tangerine to taro, and any desired toppings. Smoothies, slushies, and hot tea round out the offerings. There's no seating, so keep in mind you'll have to enjoy that peppermint milk tea outside. 1118 Burlingame Ave., Burlingame.
