Beer of the Week: Green Flash Green Bullet

In an attempt to define the essence of hardcore pornography, Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart famously said "I know it when I see it." We often apply the same thought process to Triple IPAs. Officially speaking, the style doesn't formally exist. Beers submitted for judging as Triple IPAs tend to get lumped into the now-ubiquitous Double IPA style category. But, sometimes a hoppy brew just has a little more...umph. While we haven't settled on any particular guideline to separate out Triple IPAs from the rest of the pack, "we know them when we taste them."

Not many brewers have used the Triple IPA moniker, although some of our local breweries are leading the way (Russian River's deservedly famous Pliny the Younger comes to mind). San Diego's Green Flash Brewing has now jumped into the fray with their Green Bullet Triple IPA. Originally brewed as a draft-only specialty in 2011 to celebrate the brewery's ninth anniversary, the brew was an immediate hit with local hopheads. The new release is the first time the beer has seen the inside of a bottle.

This hop-bomb is named after a New Zealand hop called Green Bullet. The brew also utilizes Pacific Gem, another Kiwi hop that American brewers are increasingly fond of. The initial aroma is what you might expect, with huge notes of citrus and tropical fruit wrapped up in a blast of resinous pine. The botanical similarities between hops and marijuana are also readily apparent -- this beer is dank. The flavor follows suit with notes of grapefruit and mango swathed in a firm bitterness that lingers after each sip. Drinking this brew with our eyes closed brought back memories of hiking over damp pine needles, bag of dried pineapple in hand.

We're dangerously close to the end of our Indian summer. Try this beer while the sun is shining, and before everything turns to pumpkins and barleywine. Green Flash Green Bullet is currently available at better beer shops throughout the Bay Area.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
