Yank Sing Profiles Customers As Asian, Non-Asian

Posted By on Thu, Sep 5, 2013 at 3:00 PM

Turns out that the ordering system at Yank Sing, that profiles customers on whether they're Asian, non-Asian or child, is the company's way of tracking demographics.

A popular photo posted on Reddit earlier today shows a waiter ringing in a customer's tab and captures a computer screen where servers must categorize the diner on their Asian or non-Asian background.

Shift lead Shi Li, who works at the Stevenson St. location downtown, said that the options don't lead to any sort of discount, extras, or priority seating.

The Tamale Lady Strikes Back

Posted By on Thu, Sep 5, 2013 at 2:00 PM

Just another night in the Mission. - ANNA ROTH

  • Just another night in the Mission.

Virginia Ramos, aka the Tamale Lady, paid a price for her ubiquity: the city shut her down in June, only days prior to her 60th birthday. (Apparently, thwarting a thousand hangovers does not constitute a public good.)

Now, with help from Supervisor David Campos and other sympathetic city agencies and bar owners -- like the dudes behind her frequent haunt, the Eagle -- the Tamale Lady is getting a brick-and-mortar of her own. She's got savings enough even for rent in the Mission but needs extra funds for a full commercial kitchen build-out, which is where Indiegogo comes in handy (although the campaign is only at 20 percent of its goal).

Every morning at 8 a.m., Pizzaiolo quietly opens its doors to a small morning crowd. If you know their faces, you'll recognize a handful of the East Bay's brightest literati gathering between the brick walls, scrawling new works into their leatherbound notebooks. It's at once a morning writers' hub, a point of reconnection for old friends, and a warm stop-in for coffee. Against the backdrop of a wood-burning pizza oven's warm glow, amid the whirling aromas the kitchen crew's dinner prep, it's a romantic scene. Add to that the spot's famous buttermilk doughnut, and it's a veritably magic morning spot.

La Urbana Is the Fanciest Thing to Hit Divis in Maybe Ever

  • The stylish bar at the new La Urbana on Divis.

Gorgeous, pricey, full of mezcal and replacing a hippie gardening store called Plant It Earth, La Urbana is going to divide Divis like Bi-Rite never could.

Let's start with the "full of mezcal" part. There is a mezcal julep and a floral mezcal and cacao concoction, plus the martini-esque "Acapulco - Manila," inspired by a trade route from the 1700s, that is made with mezcal agave de Cortés and sake. It may hit you like a Pan Am Clipper to the head.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
