New Juicer in Town: Happy Moose Juice

Cold-pressed juice: so hot right now. With the coming expansion of the Juice Shop to the Hayes Valley Proxy, Pressed Juicery's new spot in the Ferry building and the Project: Juice pop-up in the Tenderloin, there is certainly no shortage of cleaneses or ways to imbibe our fruits and veggies. Now welcome Ryan Armistead and Phoebe Croxton to the scene, a duo serving up their local, organic, cold-pressed Happy Moose Juice out of Range on Valencia.

From the moment you walk into the space, you're welcomed by the sleek decor of the restaurant itself, the stark contrast of white logos on vibrantly colored juices tucked into an old school refrigerator, and the mile-wide smiles of people obviously pursuing their passion. The very same day he tried his first cold-pressed juice, Armistead began researching its health benefits and started thinking about ways to bring it to his surrounding community. After meeting Croxton, a nutrition science graduate from Bastyr University with a desire to start her own food business, the two set out on fulfilling their dreams together. Six months later, their vision came to fruition.

Sure, the name may be a bit quirky, but that's all part of the plan:

"We wanted something that might provoke a smile, be memorable for whomever reads or hears it, and be reflective of who we are as individuals. Happy Moose Juice reminds you not to take life too seriously, but to seriously enjoy each moment you have," explains Armistead.

The names of their juices reflect that same jovial personality, with playful names like the Pharmoosey Rx (Carrot, Beet, Spinach, Kale, Ginger and Garlic), Chocolate Moose (Almonds, Dates Cacao and Filtered Water) and the Kale Earnhardt (Kale, Spinach, Green Apple, Celery and Lemon) -- which just so happens to be #3 on the menu for all you NASCAR fans out there. But don't let the cutsy names fool you: each flavor is bold yet balanced, letting each ingredient sing without dominating any other.

Croxton uses her dietetic background to concoct recipes that are not only delicious, but can also help aid with everyday ailments. The Tropical Roots (Pineapple, Carrot, Ginger and Turmeric) helps fight inflammation while adding a fun twist by way of the warm, earthy turmeric serving as a counterbalance the sweet fruit. The Jala-piña Greens (Pineapple, Kale, Spinach, Cucumber and Jalapeño) leaves just a trace of a tingle to draw you in for another taste without wrecking your palate with spice, allowing you to blissfully soak up all of the vitamins in the veggies.

They also plan to offer seasonal varieties, and currently have the Strawberry Fields (Carrot, Orange, Strawberry, Beet and Ginger) that is vibrant, fruity and bright, as well as the Refresh and So Clean, Clean (Watermelon, Cucumber and Mint) which is purifying and hydrating, and would quite frankly serve as both the perfect post-workout thirst-quencher and an excellent base for summer cocktails.

Happy Moose Juice is producing in extremely small batches, with a maximum output of 75 bottles per day from their two Norwalk Hydraulic Press juicers, so certain flavors can sell out quickly. You can find them on Good Eggs, but for the more personalized experience, stop by Range between 8 a.m-2 p.m. (closed Tuesday and Wednesday), or 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Sundays. Though the drinks come in glass bottles (with a $2 deposit) and are available to go, Armistead and Croxton encourage people to pull up a barstool, sip, and stay awhile: to enjoy each moment.
