Butchers & Beers Celebrates Beer Week, America

The Super Bowl is over, which means that we'll have to wait until July 4 for another holiday that celebrates the old-fashioned American values of red meat and cold beer -- but wait!

For Beer Week, Almanac joins 4505 Meats to throw the second annual Butchers & Beers event, a shindig devoted to all things meaty and malty. Next Friday, seven Bay Area brewers will be pouring unlimited tastes of their beers, alongside "porky deliciousness" from 4505 for dinner. Plus, the event will be held at St. Gregory's Church as a fundraiser for the Food Pantry, which means you can feel good about yourself even as you destroy your liver and arteries.

Okay, "Shit Bartenders Say" is a Pretty Great Mixology Parody Too

Posted By on Wed, Feb 6, 2013 at 2:45 PM

shit_bartenders_say.jpg

In this morning's recap of our favorite mixology parodies in recent memory, we neglected to mention last year's "Shit Bartenders Say," a fact many of you pointed out to us on Twitter. We apologize -- we never saw it the first time around, because we tired of the "Shit [People] Say" meme almost as soon as it started.

But whether because the concept seems fresh again 12 months later, or because it's actually pretty funny, we admit to LOLing at this one more than once. (Favorite lines: "Aquavit bores me." "You should try my cherry bark cayenne bitters." "Am I the only one that gets smoke on this?")

It's not quite as good as Parks & Rec's masterful skewering of "molecular mixology" a few weeks ago, but it's pretty funny. Watch it after the jump.

Now that SF Weekly offices have moved to the Financial District, we've been exploring the workday lunch options with some gusto. And among the favorites we've already found, one of the standouts is the week-old BiBimBar in the newly reopened International Food Court. It offers rice bowls, cold soba noodle bowls, and (coming soon) ssam wraps topped with banchan and meats like bulgogi, spicy pork belly, marinated chicken, and jangjolim -- all familiar Korean barbecue flavors made healthy and portable for the workday.

Our Three Favorite Mixology Parodies, in Honor of This Week's Review

"THIS IS THE WRONG WAY TO CONSUME ALCOHOL."
  • "This is the wrong way to consume alcohol."

In this week's review, I called out new Mission hotspot Trick Dog for coming dangerously close to being a parody of the worst kind of mixology bar (it isn't, by the way, because the food and drinks are almost uniformly awesome). This was very much on my mind during my visits, partially because the pretentions of mixology can get ridiculous in a hurry -- you know, just give me my goddamn drink already -- and partially because the past few years have been rich in mixology parody videos. Here are three of the best.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
