Knife Sharpening and Skills Intensive

Where: 18 Reasons, 3674 18th St., 568-2710

When: Sun., Feb. 3, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Cost: $120 (purchase in advance via Brown Paper Tickets)

The rundown: Josh Donald of Bernal Cutlery will arm you with the right way to take care of your knives and keep them properly pointy. Meanwhile, Bi-Rite Market's John Lee will equip you with knife techniques in this boot camp-like session while you prepare a group lunch. Bring your chef's knife for onsite sharpening; you'll also get a bag of vegetables and recipes to play with later.

Valentine's Day Sweets 2013

Where: La Cocina, 2948 Folsom, 824-2729

When: Wed., Feb. 13, 6:30 to 9 p.m.

Cost: $80 for one, $150 for two; purchase in advance via Eventbrite

The rundown: Proprietresses of La Cocina-affiliated businesses help you prepare first-class confections. You'll make truffles with Christine Doerr (Neo Cocoa), caramels with Cristina Arantes (Kika's Treats), and cupcakes with Elvia Buenda (La Luna Cupcakes) before eating a dinner made by Delicioso Creperie.

Soba Making

Where: San Francisco Cooking School, 690 Van Ness, 346-2665

When: Sat., Feb. 16, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Cost: $160 (purchase in advance via SFCS)

The rundown: By the end of this five-hour, hands-on session taught by Common Grains founder Sonoko Sakai, you'll know all about this healthy buckwheat noodle. Sakai teaches soba-making in the Nihachi style and plans to send students home with soba and two different dipping sauces, as well as recipes for hot and cold dishes.
