A Taste of Modern Luxury: Celebrity Cruises Pops Up in San Francisco

Where: Stable Cafe, 2128 Folsom (at 17th St.), 552-1199

When: November 15, 12:15 p.m. and 1 p.m. seatings

Cost: $25 (purchase in advance via Eventbrite)

The rundown: A two-day run of Celebrity Cruises serving lunch and dinner on dry land is mostly sold out except for two lunch seatings. This ship takes food seriously and chef John Suley, who will be here, is the first and only cruise line chef to have been invited to cook at the James Beard House. The menu has been kept under wraps but there is a vegetarian option. Proceeds benefit up and coming culinary students with a donation to the scholarship fund at the Culinary Institute of America. Special perk: Attend this event and you could win a seven-day cruise to Alaska.

Truck Stop Cafe

Where: Truck, 1900 Folsom (at 15th St.), 255-0306

When: Wed., Nov. 14, 6-10 p.m.

Cost: $5-14 (cash only; menu items à la carte)

The rundown: Truck Stop Cafe has neatly filled the niche for patrons who want to swallow elevated versions of comfort foods (meatloaf sandwich, chicken hash) and enjoy recreations of last meals of Death Row killers while eating to the beat of a gay bar. This time, the last meal special is goat cheese and tapenade grilled cheese, sweet potato chips, and olive oil cake with apple butter in honor of the misdeeds of inmates Victor Feguer and Robert Buell. They each only wanted an olive before they died; child rapist and murderer Buell was paying homage to Feguer, who murdered a random person he called out of the phone book in 1963. Bon appetit!

Paul Skrentny Pop-Up

Where: The Guest Chef, (510) 658-7378

When: Nov. 13-15, 5:30-9 p.m.; Nov. 16-17, 5:30-10 p.m.

Cost: $7-19 (menu items à la carte)

The rundown: Skrentny is a Guest Chef regular who operates a mobile business called Paul's Paellas, and here he's serving three versions of paella (veggie, chicken chorizo, and seafood) as well as a variety of bites including quail Scotch eggs, smoked duck flatbread, mac and cheese, pulled pork tacos, and meatballs.

Pizan's Italian Seafood Room

Where:Doctor's Lounge, 4826 Mission (at France); (650) 922-0326 (Pizan's number)

When: Fridays through Sundays, 5-10 p.m.

Cost: $10-30 (cash only; menu items à la carte)

The rundown: A family-run Italian pop-up-in-a-bar serves house-made pasta with a "sea to table" ethos (think Dungeness crab pasta and seafood cannelloni). For those who like to play matchmaker, Pizan's is also open to additional venues and is available for catering gigs.
