Beer of the Week: The Bruery's Autumn Maple Tastes Like Thanksgiving's Sweet Side

Chances are, by the time Halloween rolls around, every pumpkin beer will have a special place as an impulse buy in your shopping cart. Unfortunately, the chances are even better that the beer in your wagon has very little pumpkin in it -- or possibly none at all. Many of the "pumpkin" beers that crop up in October are simply vessels for a big dose of nutmeg, clove, and allspice. This week's featured brew, though generally lumped into the pumpkin beer category, is one of those that doesn't contain a shred of pumpkin, though it does contain another favorite fall ingredient.

The Bruery's Autumn Maple is, however, brewed with 17 lbs of yams per barrel. In official brewer speak, that translates to "a whole lotta yams." The brew also contains the requisite cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice, and kicks things up with additions of vanilla, molasses, and maple syrup. Fermentation with a Belgian yeast strain contributes notes of dark fruit and clove that mesh nicely with the other ingredients.

The beer tastes remarkably like the sweeter side of a Thanksgiving meal -- that is, if your idea of Thanksgiving involves roasted yams with marshmallow served over some caramel bread pudding with a bit of orange zest on top. We suggest indulging in this brew as a Halloween treat, and stashing a bottle away for Turkey Day. And at 10% ABV, the beer can make any family gathering even more interesting. Enjoy with roasted game birds, pumpkin ravioli, or poured over a scoop of brown butter ice cream from Humphry Slocombe. Diabetes, here we come.
