San Francisco has a poor reputation as somewhat of a ghost town when it comes to late night eating. But Tablehopper maven Marcia Gagliardi is challenging this notion with her new iPhone app, Tablehopper's Top Late Night Eats, which maps out nearly 100 places in town that are open after 11 p.m.
"As a night owl who likes to eat, drink, and dance late, I always try to uncover places with tasty late-night options -- I am not one to go to bed hungry," says Gagliardi. "I'm always asking my bartender and server and chef pals where they like to go.
"Sadly, we don't have a late-night scene with a lot of options for good higher-end food," she admits. "But we do have a bunch of pretty good and very affordable spots open late. And if you like Korean food, there are a bunch of options."
Throughout her map, there are small but significant revelations such as El Zocolo, a Mission spot for pupusas that rocks until 3 a.m., or Gaspare's, a pizza place in the Richmond that serves until midnight (though her coverage of the Avenues, where there is a preponderance of late night bites, is surprisingly slim).
Gagliardi reveals her top picks within her app: "Lers Ros, Wing Wings, King of Thai Noodle House, Katana-ya, Toyose, Da Beef, Nan California Korean, Ryoko's, Absinthe, and of course Nopa. I was also surprised when doing my research to see how late Magnolia serves food [midnight and 1 a.m.]. Score!"
Gagliardi's app is currently for iPhone, with an Android version due soon.
