Drink of the Week: Golden Gate 75th Celebration in Cocktails

With the official 75th Anniversary of the opening of the Golden Gate Bridge this weekend, the festivities will also come in cocktail form.*

At Aurea inside the Renaissance Stanford Court Hotel on Nob Hill, they're serving the St. Charles Punch ($12, Pierre Ferrand Ambre Cognac, Fonsecca Terra Bella Organic Ruby Port, lemon juice, fresh berries), a drink that was popular in 1937 when the Golden Gate Bridge opened up. The interplay of the grape based brandy with the ruby port is fantastic, with just enough lemon juice to brighten the drink up.

Only available this weekend (today through Memorial Day), the St. Charles Punch is the perfect long drink that makes for a great pit stop at the walk over the hill.

At Presidio Social Club, bar manager Tim Stookey has put together a signature Golden Gate #2 ($7.50, gin, light rum, lemon juice, falernum and creme de cacao). Over at Michael Mina, Carlo Splendorini has crafted the international orange Morning Fog ($11, smoked vodka, fig marmalade, sparkling wine) and Golden Gate 75 ($11, No. 209 Gin, raspberry gomme, lemon, Aperol, egg white) in homage to the milestone. Elixir Saloon has a whole menu of five drinks in honor of the celebration, like the Golden Gate Fog ($10, Rhum Clement Creole Shrub, mint, white peach puree, Kubler Absinthe) a layered drink in which absinthe "fog" sit above an orange cocktail base. For your brunch drinking, Bluestem Brasserie will offer 75-cent cans of Hamm's beer (produced in SF from 1954-1972) as well as a selection of all-American bar bites for 75 cents, like housemade corn dogs, Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
