Jupiter Brewpub Offers a Summer of Sour Beers

There's a reason certain beer styles are released seasonally. Spiced pumpkin beers flood the shelves during the fall, when we celebrate with jack-o-lanterns and sweet potato pie. In the coldest winter months, breweries release their warming, roasty imperial stouts. In the summer months of sandals and tank tops, people reach for brews that are thirst quenching and lighter on the palate (for a moment, let's indulge the fantasy of a scorching Bay Area summer).

In addition to the usual summer suspects such as lagers and pale ales, sour beers make for a perfect summer sipper. These brews make use of wild yeast and bacteria to create pleasantly sour flavors. Sours are typically lighter in body and lower in alcohol, but as complex as can be. By triggering the salivary glands into working overtime, these beers also create a perceived hydrating effect.

Even if our SF summers aren't exactly tropical, there is some respite from the winds just across the bay. This weekend, and through the summer months, Berkeley's Jupiter Brewpub hosts Sour Sun-Days. Every third Sunday, the brewery will offer a selection of four to five sour and rare beers on their patio. Themed offerings will allow guests to explore different regional styles under the sour beer umbrella.

Can't make it to the first event? Don't worry, those beers were sour anyway.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
