The past 24 hours in gossip, innuendo, and cold hard facts about the San Francisco food scene.
Goodbye Rebel Within. First his pursuit of a brick-and-mortar fell through, and now Tell Tale Preserve owner William Werner is calling it quits altogether. It appears the partnership with Whisk Group, which we wrote about yesterday, was rocky, and after Tell Tale Preserve's offer to buy out Whisk Group was declined, Werner saw no other option than to fold. We'll sure miss their baked goods; last day to get them at the Ferry Building is tomorrow.
After they were squeezed out of China Basin due to a rent increase, Specialty's Café & Bakery found a new place for another location of the mini chain: 500 Howard (at First St.) LiveSOMA reports the latest space, which is also its largest, is now open.
Another new restaurant, this one in the foggy reaches of the City: The Richmond blog shares that Green Island Restaurant, offering Chinese and Vietnamese dishes, has been open for about a month (4012 Geary at Fifth Ave.). We're curious about "Frog with Rice in Clay Pot."
In the Financial District, one restaurant is readying to fold as another takes its place. Grub Street shares that Basil Leaf Café will be replaced by what looks to be a Middle Eastern-inspired restaurant: Ottoman (584 Washington at Montgomery). No word yet on an opening date.
Food Truck Update: Yesterday we mentioned Oakland's Bites on Broadway would be suspended until organizer Karen Hester produced valid health department permits of the participating vendors. What the Fork reports she filed the paperwork yesterday and the food truck gathering will happen tonight as planned.
