Free French Fare Saturday at Ferry Plaza

I recall Dijon as a pleasant stop between the hedonism of Nice and the elegance of Paris. Mint leaves crushed to make tea, marzipan, and shops stacked with mustards the way Cowgirl Creamery is stacked with cheese are my gastronomic memories.

I had to buy an airline ticket and Eurail pass to discover Dijon. You just have to get to the Ferry Building on Saturday. Dijon is coming to SF and bringing its food, wine, mustard and art, and all but the wine is free.

The tongue-in-mustard "Dijon Must'art" program is tied to the opening exhibit of Medieval Tomb Sculptures, on loan from Dijon, at the Legion of Honor. Five of Dijon's top chefs from four of its favorite restaurants, with three Michelin stars among them, will provide bites and cooking demonstrations at two free events at the Ferry Building.

On Saturday, chefs will prepare tastes of organic stuffed chicken breast with Burgundy escargot and Dijon mustard, as well as basil dungeness crab tartare. Next Tuesday, you can try the tastes and watch cooking demonstrations as well. Maille brand mustard will provide samples and demonstrate the art of mustard making.

Dijonese Sommelier Patrice Gillard will work with Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant to provide pairings for the free bites and talk to guests about the wines. Wines aren't free. The pairing, five ounces of Bret Brothers La Verchère Viré-Clessé 2008 and two ounces of Domaine Bruno Clair Les Grasses Têtes Marsannay 2008, is $20, and includes the same free bites available outside.

If you like art, but won't make the show at the Legion of Honor, there's a replica of one of the 14th century alabaster sculptures, and video about the pieces on exhibit.

Saturday's event will be in a large tent opposite the Marketplace entry on the pier. Tuesday's event will be under one of the arches of the Ferry Building proper.
