Learning to shake your own cocktails
In an unusual moment for the Bay Area, our weather and the calendar's declaration of summer actually agree. Dust off your shaker and your bartending skills with a couple of classes this week that'll make your pool, park, or apartment party as potent as the Vieux Carré.
Mixology 101 at the Boothby Center
When: Thu., June 23, 6-8 p.m.
The rundown: Get all the fundamentals with hands-on training in tools, cocktail construction, categories, and ingredients. Instructor H. Joseph Ehrmann (
Elixir) will also teach you how to make the four fundamental "M" cocktails: martinis, margaritas, mojitos, and Manhattans.
Berry Shrub Workshop
Where: Ferry Building Marketplace, 1 Ferry Building (at Embarcadero)
When: Thu., June 23, 5:30-7:30 p.m.
The rundown: A berry shrub may sound like something
Crunch Berries grow on, but in fact is a colonial-style fruit syrup made from fruits, sugar, and vinegar as a way to preserve and provide a tart brightness to drinks. Used in cocktails and sodas, shrubs provide a perfect showcase for the peak berry bounty at the market now. Join Jennifer Colliau (of
Slanted Door and
Small Hand Foods) and Aaron Gregory Smith (
15 Romolo) for the history, uses, and recipes of this forgotten mixer. Class includes a recipe handbook and hands-on production of two shrubs to take home.
