Last-Minute Mother's Day Options That'll Make It Look Like You Planned

Posted By on Fri, May 6, 2011 at 7:51 AM

If you're reading this, odds are you don't have a clue what you're going to do with your mom, your wife, or (worst-case scenario) both this Sunday for Mother's Day. Relax, we've got you covered with three battle-tested options that include not only a solid meal but also a little nearby activity for killing time as a family unit. Yeah, it's Mother's Day and all, but who doesn't want to keep alone time with the kids (or worse, your father-in-law) down to the absolute minimum?

Option 1: Nature

Shanghai Dumpling King doesn't exactly smack of refined luxury ― maybe that's why it's generally pretty mellow on Mother's Day, especially before 11:30 a.m. Load mom up with a few orders of soup dumplings, a massive, gravy-drenched lion's head meatball, and the sugar egg puffs they pass around the dining room (WARNING! The egg puffs aren't free. SFoodie has learned this the hard way). On its own, this meal probably wouldn't impress, but add a hike at nearby Lands End and you'll look like you had an actual agenda. Moms love agendas. Once she's gazing out across the Pacific toward the Marin Headlands, she'll forget that you just blew all of 30 bucks on "brunch."

Option 2: Roadtrip

Want to really kill time on Mother's Day? Make a day of it in Pescadero, an hour or so south of San Francisco. An afternoon spent at Phipps Country Store and Farm should please everyone (except maybe you, since the cell coverage sucks). Activities include berry picking, dried bean grazing, and plain old tooling around this hippie heaven. Mom will just assume that you actually investigated options for her special day, and be genuinely wowed when you roll up to the legendary Duarte's Tavern for an early supper ... and have a reservation. Most city slickers don't know that Duarte's takes reservations (yes, there are still quite a few available), and mom will feel like a big hitter when she strolls by the other moms whose sucker sons didn't plan ahead. Bonus: Get her and the little ones in bibs for a cioppino feast and you've got your Christmas card picture taken care of. You can even bring back one of the overrated olallieberry pies to that cute girl at the office your coworkers.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
