Nog-ocado, Natalie's Footwear, and Piling onto Noah's Ark

SFoodie's roundup of tips, news, and rants from the week in animal-free eats.

  • Over on the PPK, vegan goddess Isa Chandra Moskowitz posted a recipe for a vegan nog that includes avocado. I don't know 'bout all that but the lady is super talented so it's probably the tastiest. Try it and report back?

Last year, America's factory farms used over 29 million pounds of antibiotics. That is just fucking super scary. With all the hormones, pesticides, and antibiotics in our meat, pretty soon kids will start growing full beards by the time they're 5. And I'm just talking about the girls! Of course, that's if the common cold doesn't get them first.
  • So, Natalie Portman is vegan and she's in ads for some Dior perfume and so they made her custom vegan shoes to wear in it. This might be a case for all vegans to get famous: free shit from designers. I mean, I'll do pretty much anything for some free stuff. Besides work. Hell, I'd get naked and shimmy down Market Street for a free Jamba Juice. And that's for the 12-ounce size. I legally can't type what I'd do for 24 ounces. Point is, celebs! They're just like us!
  • Good Housekeeping is releasing a vegan cookbook! If that doesn't signify some sort of mainstream acceptance, I don't know what does. Or wait, does this mean veganism has jumped the shark? GAH! We can't win!

  • Surprise: Smithfield abuses pigs. And how! You know what they say: Lay down with Paula Deen and you're gonna get fleas. Or diabetes. Anyway, super gross and they are the worst. Poor pigs, they are the most awesome of animals, so smart, cool, so much personality. I imagine that if Rosie Perez and John Goodman had a baby, that baby would be a pig. That's how cool that baby would be. I've stopped making sense; the holidays are trying to kill me.
  • In super-sad news, a Tyson Foods worker was killed when a feed silo collapsed on him. Ugh, awful. Working in factory farms and slaughterhouses is some of the most dangerous work in the United States, with hardly any oversight and treacherous working conditions. Makes my whining about BART seem kinda ridiculous. And still I rise!
  • Crappily, the SF Vegan Bakesale is postponed until January. This is on account of the fact that it's supposed to rain hella bad this weekend/possibly flood/grab your kids, grab your wife, and grab two of each animal because it's about to get Noah's ark around here!
  • Awesome weekend event alert: El Rio (your dive! and also, best place on earth!) is having a blanket drive for San Francisco Animal Care and Control this weekend! For every item you bring to the bar from the list on the Facebook invite, they'll give you a $1-off coupon to use over the weekend for any drink. So, give stuff to needy animals and get cheap drinks. It's a Christmas miracle!
  • Oh, the Loving Hut we reported on a couple weeks ago? It's supposed to officially open this Saturday! Let's all go and eat a lot! Oh, and if you do join their (delicious?) cult, let me know so I can have all your worldly possessions. That's how a cult works!

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
