"To alcohol! The cause of ― and solution to ― all of life's problems!" -Homer Simpson

The modern cocktail revival comes with a near-fetishizing of the pre-Prohibition and Prohibition eras many outside the bar world assumed was simply a fad. Old-timey outfits, forgotten recipes, speakeasies ― bartenders can't seem to shake an obsession with cocktail culture's darkest hour, even as they reclaim the legitimacy the profession held before Jan. 16, 1920. That's the date Prohibition took hold, ending America's status as the cocktail world's capital.

Prohibition not only erased a chunk of our national culture by putting a large number of small local distilleries, wineries, and breweries out of business, but it also shifted the cocktail epicenter from the U.S. to other countries, as talented bartenders fled to locations more welcoming of their skills. It's no surprise, then, that Repeal Day ― the celebration of the ratification of the 21st Amendment, which ended Prohibition on Dec. 5, 1933 ― is a cause for rejoicing among bartenders. Here's a quick guide to Repeal Day events happening in S.F. on Sun., Dec. 5:

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
