Tablehopper leads this week's edition with news that an izakaya named
Chotto (3317 Steiner St.) will open Monday, Dec. 6. The pitch: sushi with Japanese fish, grilled skewers, pickles and small plates, and a long menu of shochu and sake bottles.
Inside Scoop reports that Paul Canales is leaving
Oliveto after 15 years. Canales sous'ed under Michael Tusk, became chef de cuisine under Paul Bertolli; then when Bertolli left to start Fra' Mani, Canales took over executive chef duties. Like most celebrity couples that break up, restaurant and chef say the split was amicable; Oliveto already has a new chef named -- Jonah Rhodehamel -- and Canales hints that he has a lil' something on the side. Thrillist shares the good news about the opening of
The Grill in SOMA (799 Bryant, 543-4745), which specializes in Chicago hot dogs, foot-longs, deli sandwiches, and something called the "Heart Attack."
Eater SF reports that
Top Chef contestant Ryan Scott (of Mission Beach Cafe, back in the day) is launching a new food truck called
3-Sum Eats at the Upper Haight Off the Grid on Thursday night. The pitch: a few sandwiches, salads, soups, plus gnocchi Tater Tots. SFoodie sincerely hopes that Scott didn't intend any double entendres with a name like "3-Sum." Because that wouldn't be family friendly.
According to a piece about
Tell Tale Preserve Co. in this week's
T Magazine, William Werner's pastry shop on Maiden Lane won't be opening until February. Tell Tale's backers, the Whisk Group, seem to be experiencing a few logistical problems.
Tablehopper just learned that another Whisk project named
Brasserie Lille won't be coming to 101 California, as was reported six months back. Owner Mark Weiss says he's looking for a new location.
Two more Tablehopper finds: A restaurant named
Mazzat Lebanese will be opening at 501 Fell in Hayes Valley. And, come mid-January, the Wine Jar's owner, Kamran Shirazi, is opening
a second wine bar called
Pe Yale (3131 Fillmore).
