Grub Limps In, Locavore Sources Softly

Posted By on Wed, Oct 27, 2010 at 10:37 AM

The past 24 hours in gossip, innuendo, and cold hard facts about the San Francisco restaurant scene.

Tablehopper Marcia G. pulled up to the curb yesterday with a trunk full of opening news. First, she laid to rest that palpably unsettled feeling hanging over the Mission: Yeah, Grub (758 Valencia, 431-4782) has soft-opened. Deep breath now.

Another softie from Miss G.: Locavore (3215 Mission, 821-1918) is quietly, um, sourcing locally. (The pitch: Cali bistro cooking in Bernal from chef Jason Moniz, communal table, reclaimed materials ― like you didn't know.) Opening harder, apparently, are Fillmore Bakeshop (in the ex-Delanghe space, 1890 Fillmore, 923-0711 - updated Euro-American goodies) and Sweet Maple (2101 Sutter, 655-9169). The last one's devoted to all-day breakfast, Equator coffee, and for lunch, contemporary diner stuff.

Meanwhile, Eater's Carolyn A. is all over the inter-city World Series food wager pitting S.F.Dungeness crab, sourdough, Ghirardelli chocolate, and Anchor Steam against barbecue from a place called Spring Street in Arlington, Tex. Really, Gavin? Local Dungeness isn't even in season yet. On the bright side, if the Giants lose the Series, is that Newsom could just send an aide to SFO to pick up the stuff on his loser list before packing it onto a plane. That'd save payroll hours.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
