Bento Art: Fantastically Geeky Lunches

Posted By on Wed, Oct 6, 2010 at 7:33 AM

Bento boxes, for the uninitiated, are small lunches arranged in compact compartments. They originated in Japan, and a typical meal can be a simple serving of rice, vegetables, and chicken. But bento has developed a fanatical following, and lovers of the lunch medium have turned it into an art form. Not surprisingly, geeky themes have cropped up in more than one bento box. Here are eight fantastic examples.

1. Star Wars Bento

Wendy Copely writes a blog called Wendolonia where, among other things, she chronicles the making of lovely bento boxes for her son's school lunches. We love this Star Wars installment ― with a honey light saber!

2. Super Mario Bento

Sometimes you have to eat something with a face, especially if it's the face of a certain mustachioed plumber.

3. Batman Bento

If only you could shine a signal in the sky and have this bento box land in your lap.

4. Neon Genesis: Evangelion Bento

Anime fans worship the series Neon Genesis: Evangelion, so much so that we can't imagine how someone could bear to eat Shinji, Rei, and Asuka. Okay, Asuka is pretty annoying.

5. Star Trek Bento

Beam this straight into my mouth, Scotty! This offering comes from Bento Challenge, a Live Journal community that has a theme bento competition once a week. This one was entered in a TV-themed contest.

6. Dr.Who Bento

In case you were wondering who won the TV challenge, and trumped the Star Trek entry, it's this meticulous edible recreation of Dr.Who.

7. Linux Bento

In case you ever wanted to devour Tux, the adorable Linux penguin, here's your chance.

8. Windows XP Bento

This may be the only example of a time when it's acceptable to find a mouse in your lunchbox.

9. Lost Bento

Well, it's Jack Shepard Bento, to be specific. Just look at that crumbled seaweed beard! Yum. This example comes by the way of yet another entertaining bento blog, Adventures in Bento.

10. Reddit Bento

Yep, it's an homage to link-sharing website, Reddit. Reddit may have been excited to eat Digg's lunch, but at least Digg can actually eat Reddit for lunch.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
