Ladies, when it comes to getting exactly what you want, it is not always easy getting your special someone to get the hint. Delicate pastries, cupcakes, bonbons, and chocolates can be hard to coax from a clueless lover. Our advice: Drop a strong hint that what you want is a box of Paulette macarons. Make it really strong.

His first question will probably be, "Wait, a macaroon is one of those dried-up coconut cookies that shows up around the holidays, right?" Nice try. Tell him that macarons are complex and difficult-to-make almond cookies filled with infused ganache or jam. Tell him these little gems are the haute couture of pastry. If that fails, tell him they're French Oreos.

Macaron enthusiasts prize an eggshell-matte surface with a weightless, feathery interior, and a fountain of flavor. In the past five years macarons have become all the rage in Paris, where lines out the gold-leaf doors of Ladurée can stretch down the Champs-Élysées as far as the eye can see. On this side of the Atlantic, the macarons at Paulette are among the cream of the crop.

Paulette's macarons features inspirations from pastry chef Christophe Michalak, who's resumé spans from the Plaza Athénée in Paris to the bronze-y charms of Beverly Hills, where his first U.S. Paulette boutique took the ritzy by storm in 2007. Our Francophile city got its own Paulette in 2009, in Hayes Valley, where macarons are flown in daily for freshness.

The trendy boutique is similar to walking into Oompa Loompa Land, where neon cookies line a glass window, tempting the eye in every which direction. Our suggestion is to tell him to get a box of a dozen ($19) in various flavors, so you can compare tastes with your amour after he "surprises" you. Violet cassis, Sicilian pistachio, rose, salted caramel, passion fruit: These little jewels are sure to capture the heart of your partner, too, and set the battle lines for getting what you want in your love life, be it the occasional fancy cookie or whatever else it takes to keep you enthralled.

Paulette Macarons: 437 Hayes, (at Gough), 864-2400.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
