The Xocolate Bar's idea of fresh produce.
Berkeley's the Xocolate Bar has come up with a sweet twist on Community Supported Agriculture, which enables members to pick up regular shipments of farm-fresh produce. Instead of a CSA, the Xocolate Bar is now enrolling members in its CSC (Community Supported Chocolate) program. Subscribers have their choice of biweekly or monthly pickups at set times and places, and can decide between a 10-piece assortment with a chocolate bar ($25) or 20-piece with two bars ($45). There's also a choice of all-vegan or a mixed assortment (many of Xocolate's greatest pieces are vegan), and certain allergies can be taken into consideration (nuts, say).
Owners Malena Lopez-Maggi and Clive Brown are looking for volunteers to host safe pickup locations in exchange for free goodies. Planned cities include San Rafael, Santa Rosa, and the Berkeley store, but maybe people can talk them into bringing the CSC into the city? More details are on the Xocolate Bar's site.
The Xocolate Bar 1709 Solano (at Tulare), Berkeley, (510) 525-9626.
