"It's massive. It's two stories," says co-owner Jacob Jaber, speaking from the space this morning (it last housed Cafe de la Paz). "We have a living
room as big as a mansion's and an outdoor patio. Even though we don't
have the signs up, we're already getting tons of customers who know
about us." Like the other Philz locations, the cafe serves pastries from
Berkeley's Nabolom Bakery, and plans to install a large-screen TV for UC Berkeley games.
The new shop places Philz within a few feet of Guerilla Coffee
(which pours Blue Bottle, FYI), and a few blocks away from the original
Peet's store. SFoodie, which knows from long experience how passionate
North Berkeleyites can get about these things, predicts a spate of
fisticuffs between fans of the three roasters.
Philz Coffee 1600 Shattuck (at Cedar), Berkeley, (510) 705-1083; open Mon.-Fri. 6 a.m.-9 p.m., Sat.-Sun. 6:30 a.m.- 9 p.m.
