The local coffee scene is so crowded it can get confusing. One thing that's clear, even through clouds of latte steam: the offer of free Straus soft-serve ice cream from Mission purveyor Rodger's, Sunday afternoons in May from 1 to 2 p.m. Toppings are extra for the Sunday special, which comes in chocolate, vanilla, and twist.

Sounds like an amiable outing, especially if sunny weather beckons, and you can do your free licking on one of Rodger's outdoor benches. And since the coffee shop is only a few blocks from Bi-Rite, Rodger's might be a good strategy for avoiding the legendary lines on 18th Street. Only thing: Considering this Sunday is Mother's Day, please tell us a free cone won't be your idea of a gift for the mommy figure in your life.

Rodger's Coffee & Tea 3520A 20th St. (at San Carlos), 829-3405; free ice cream deal Sundays in May only, 1-2 p.m.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
