Doggy Bag: KQED's Wine-Fueled Food Punditry

Our favorite morsel from the blogs.

Blogger klatsch: Local public affairs show This Week in Northern California (is it too late to beg the perennially sweet Belva Davis to be our auntie?) christened a new segment Friday: Food and Wine This Week, hosted by the perennially blond Leslie Sbrocco. Up last Friday? Bay Area Bites bloggers Stephanie Rosenbaum and Michael Procopio on the wine-splattered set of Check, Please! Bay Area. Okay, so maybe the eight-minute segment was a bit all over the map in its virgin run: Procopio, a waiter, talked about the downturn and chintzy tipping, while Rosenbaum took on street food and the SF Underground Farmers' Market. Frankly, it would've taken a whole box of Franzia White Grenache and a lot more than eight minutes to adequately probe those topics, but give Sbrocco props for broaching both. Pour a big glass of Chablis and watch for yourself (after the jump):

Etiquette Question: What Should You Do About Menu Typos?

Posted By on Mon, Feb 1, 2010 at 4:05 PM

mitcells_typo.jpg
Okay, here's a question for the collective mind: When do you tell a restaurant that there's a misspelled word on its menu or sign? The question came up for me twice on the same day last week. I spotted the first typo on the painted chalkboard at a coffee shop where I'm (probably) going to become a regular. Near the bottom of the food menu is a "bruchetta" served with "frisse."

Our Panel of Local Beer Experts Blind-Tastes Pilsners. The Winner? Pilsner Urquell

Posted By on Mon, Feb 1, 2010 at 3:27 PM

Macros, micros ― hell, we tried 'em all. - B. YAEGER

  • Macros, micros ― hell, we tried 'em all.
What better way to start a monthly series of blind beer tastings than with the quotidian Pilsner? This style of lager originated in the mid-19th century in the Bohemian town of Plzen. Often referred to as "fizzy yellow beer," straw color and Saaz hops dictate genuine Pilsners. It varies from country to country, but it's the world's most popular style.

Panelists other than this blogger included Rich Higgins, brewmaster at the soon-to-open Social Kitchen and Brewery and a certified cicerone; Tiila Abbitt, beer tasting co-ordinator and FemALEist blogger; and Eric Cripe, beer manager at The Jug Shop and another local cicerone. We sampled the beers ― all widely available for under $2 per bottle ― in this order:

1. Pilsner Urquell (Plzen, Czech Republic)

2. Czechvar (Budweis, Czech Republic)

3. Trumer Pils (Berkeley, Calif., via Salzburg, Austria)

4. Budweiser (St. Louis, Mo., or likely Fairfield, Calif., but really São Paulo, Brazil)

5. Victory Prima Pils (Downington, Penn.)

6. Pabst Blue Ribbon (Woodbridge, Il.)

7. North Coast Scrimshaw (Ft. Bragg, Calif.)

Designate a driver (Muni counts) for tomorrow night's Fillmore Cocktail Crawl, which kicks off at Yoshi's (1330 Fillmore at Eddy). Live jazz, eats, and cocktails available for ticket holders; 1300 On Fillmore (1300 Fillmore at Eddy), Rasselas Jazz Club (1534 Fillmore at Geary) and Sheba Piano Lounge (1419 Fillmore at O'Farrell) are also participating. The event is technically free ― a $5 suggested door donation goes to a local youth oriented nonprofit called Mo'MAGIC (Fillmore/Western Addition Mobilization of Adolescent Growth in Our Communities). Yes, it's totally okay to attend even if you don't register. Each venue is serving up drinks made with DonQ rum, with cell-phone voting for the best cocktail, if that's your cuppa tea rum. Details after the jump.

As we hinted last week, Brian Boitano brought a Food Network crew to Precita Park on Sunday to sample the local street-food scene for an upcoming episode of What Would Brian Boitano Make? He snacked and chatted on camera with PizzaHacker, Magic Curry Kart, Smitten Ice Cream, and Crème Brûlée Cart, and apparently dug the Filipino eats of Adobo Hobo.

Here's the Deal: $5 Wine and Tapas Starting This Week at Medjool

Posted By on Mon, Feb 1, 2010 at 12:00 PM

ELIYA/FLICKR
Rent, specifically the necessity of paying it, is an evil, relentless master. Every first of the month, after forking over so much more than we'd like ― and watching our bank account shrivel ― we stock up on lentils and vow to live more frugally. Thankfully, relatively cheap eats don't have to happen exclusively at a taqueria, burger joint, or behind one's own pulse-splattered stove. Starting today through Friday, Medjool is launching Five after Five, an ongoing special of $5 tapas and $5 glasses of wine in the bar and lounge area, 5-8 p.m. A few plates and sips won't stack up to a cost-saving spin through Trader Joe's, but Trader Joe's doesn't have a roof deck, now does it? Details after the jump.

Former Top Chef contestants Mark Peel (TC Masters) and Carla Hall (TC Season Five) were spotted at separate visits to the Saturday market at Ferry Plaza. Peel was lunching at Mijita before heading to SFO ― taking a break, apparently, from promoting his book New Classic Family Dinners and his latest L.A. restaurant The Tar Pit. Hall and husband Matthew were munching pastries from Frog Hollow.

Mission Street Food Seeking to Launch Full-Time Restaurant

Mission Street Food proprietor Anthony Myint - JESSE FRIEDMAN/BEER & NOSH

Though it only operated two nights a week (and sometimes not even that), Mission Street Food donated over $22,000 to charities that feed the hungry in 2009. This year, MSF founder Anthony Myint hopes to secure a full-time restaurant space, where he projects he can raise $40,000-$90,000 for charity annually. He's currently seeking investors who want to offer as little as $500 towards a fundraising goal of $50,000.

The Quotidian's compelling short documentary on MSF provides a great intro to Myint and his cause for the uninitiated. More details on the business proposal and call for investors are on the MSF blog.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
