A Shot and a Strip: Bacon and Bourbon Happy Hour at KoKo's

Classy. And dirty.
  • Classy. And dirty.
KoKo's co-owner Christopher Keith sums it up in two words: dive chic. The Tunnel Top alums who opened KoKo almost two years ago have just as much enthusiasm for special cocktail offers as they do for so-trashy-you-gotta-love-'em deals like the Bang Bang, a happy hour shot of Ranchero tequila and Modelo for five bones. Further melding high and low, co-owner Justin Mulford started up a bourbon and bacon happy hour about three months ago. Mulford cooks up a huge batch of applewood-smoked bacon and gives a piece to everyone who orders a shot of the brown stuff. The event has been so successful, it's permanently slated for the first Friday of every month (next sighting: Feb. 5). On all other nights, $7 buys an old-school cocktail made with above-average well spirits. Sobieski vodka, Gordon's gin, Old Overholt rye, and that Ranchero - smoothest of well tequilas - are knee-jerk pours every night.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
