Seven Tasty Food Carts (and Trucks) From Across the Country

We've got the Sexy Soup Cart, Creme Brulee Man and Amuse Buchee, but the growing food cart phenomenon isn't limited to San Francisco. That's right -- food carts and trucks throughout the nation are serving up deliciousness far beyond the usual pretzels and dogs. We've corralled seven of our favorites.

The Flavour Spot (Portland, Ore.)
Have a hankering for breakfast food at 2 p.m.? Look no further than the Flavour Spot waffle carts, located at the corner of N. Lombard and at N. Mississippi and N. Fremont. The Spot features such unique culinary waffle creations as the Ham & Cheese (with smoked Gouda), the Black Forest (with Nutella and blackberry jam), and the Sausage & Maple combo. Prices range from $2 to $4.

The Arepa Lady (New York City)
Could this be New York cousin of San Francisco's beloved Tamale Lady? The Arepa Lady, located on Roosevelt Ave. and 78th St., cooks up Colombian arepas in two varieties ( both $3): thick, small, and filled with melted cheese, or flat, wide, and folded over salty melted cheese. See a pattern here? The Sainted Arepa Lady, as she's called, winters in Colombia, so now's the perfect time to hunt her down.

The Fojol Brothers of Merlindia (Washington, D.C.)
Food from this cart comes from the magical land of Merlindia, a place, apparently, where people wear fake moustaches and goofy turbans. Still, the cause behind the Fojol Brothers' cart is dead serious: Cash from every item sold funds programs for at-risk youth. Menu items include chicken masala, chicken curry, lentils, eggplant, and the mysterious Kipoto's Fortune Curls. Prices range from $2 to $6. Check the Brothers' Twitter feed to find the where the cart will show up next.

The Grease Trucks (New Brunswick, N.J.)
These decidedly unsexy trucks along College Ave. are a Rutgers University institution, serving up calorie-filled items like the  Fat Cat, consisting of two cheeseburgers, fries, lettuce, tomatoes, and onions. In 2004, Maxim named the aptly-named Fat Darrell -- a sandwich made up of chicken fingers, mozzarella sticks, French fries, and marinara -- the best in the nation. Prices hover around $7.

Skillet Street (Seattle, Wash.)
This gourmet food truck doesn't serve up anything cheap -- prices hover around the $10 range--- but with a rotating menu featuring dishes like Thai cured confit of duck; burger with Cambozola, arugula, and bacon jam on brioche; and lavender shortbread with lemon curd and creme fraiche, well, we don't mind shelling out. Ingredients are local to the Pacific Northwest with few exceptions. Find Skillet Street at rotating locatons listed on its Web site.

Whiffies Fried Pie Cart (Portland, Ore.)
How can you go wrong with fried pie? This new food cart, located at S.E. 12th St. and Hawthorne, serves up sweet (apple, lemon, cherry) and savory (salmon, BBQ beef brisket), with prices ranging from $1 to $4. Whiffies is thinking about expanding its menu to include breakfast and lunch options.

Kogi Korean BBQ to Go (Los Angeles, California)
The roaming Kogi trucks, famous with foodies nationwide for tasty Korean, hawk irresisible items like pork belly, Korean short ribs, spicy pork, and tofu, with prices ranging from $5 to $9. Locate the trucks by checking out Kogi's Web site.
