Name: Chicharrones
Brand: 4505 Meats
Origin: San Francisco
Found at: Coffee Bar (1890 Bryant)
Cost: $3.50
Ingredients: Pork, sugar, chili, salt
Why I bought it: I missed out on getting a bag of these pork rinds homemade by local chef Ryan Farr one night when they were given out at Mission Street Food, and was curious about 'em ever since.
Tasting notes: These have a nice, light crunch (due to frying in rice bran oil, according to 4505's Web site) and a lovely balance of sweet and heat.
Would I buy it again? Yes
What other blogs/sites thought of it: Tablehopper calls it "crunchy crack-in-a-bag."
Spork (1058 Valencia) is normally open for dinner only, but today it began experimenting with Sunday brunch. It's a cute little spot that used to be a dreaded KFC, the fast-food chain which introduced the spork to America, so chef/owner Bruce Binn chose his restaurant name as a tribute to that particular innovation in silverware.
