Relatively good news on the sweet treat front led to not only a front page story (entitled "When Economy Sours, a Tootsie Roll Can Still Soothe the Soul") on Tuesday, March 22's New York Times, but also yielded the Quotation of the Day, boxed at the top of page A3: "All is well in candy land," from Jamie Hallman, identified as the "owner of a candy store in San Francisco, on an increase in sales during the economic downturn."

The store cited is Sweet Dish (2144 Chestnut) in the Marina. (It's a quote the Times liked so much they also boxed it on the jump on page 22.)

Made only at Miyabi (253 Church), the Funky Dooty Roll ($9.95) packs crunchy asparagus and perfectly ripe mango inside with spicy tuna wrapped around the outside. The fish has a decent amount of heat, but the fruit keeps it from being uncomfortable. The Funky Dooty is a fun maki that is well worth the inevitable giggling that occurs when ordering.

Applicance Sales and Service Does It All

Appliance Sales and Service (840 Folsom) is three great stores in one. First, if you have a broken appliance and know how to repair it, they can sell you the necessary replacement parts. Second, if you don't DIY, they can fix it.

Third, if you're shopping for a new appliance, and aren't happy with the limited choices at the big-box stores, this is the place to go. AS&S has the largest selection of blenders, breadmakers, can openers, coffee grinders, coffee makers, crockpots, deep fryers, egg cookers, electric kettles, food processors, graters, grinders, ice cream makers, ice crushers, juicers, mixers, percolators, popcorn makers, slicers, steamers, toaster ovens, toasters, waffle makers, and yogurt makers around. (Kamei does have a bigger selection of rice cookers.)

AS&S is not just about kitchens. They sell parts for, fix, and sell all kinds of small appliances, from shavers to irons to vacuum cleaners. (Click the image below for a larger version.)

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
