Bay Area Takes All Five Nominations for Best Chef in Pacific Region; Boulevard and A 16's Nate Appleman Among Locals Competing For Top Prizes

The prestigious James Beard Awards, given by the James Beard Foundation and often referred to as the Oscars of the restaurant and food media industries, announced their 2009 nominees.

Local restaurants and chefs competing for the top prizes include Boulevard, nominated for the Outstanding Restaurant award (against NY's Babbo and Jean-Georges, Fore Street of Portland, Maine, and Highlands Bar & Grill of Birmingham, Alabama), and A16's Nate Appleman, nominated with 4 other chefs aged 30 and under for the Rising Star Chef of the Year award. Nicole Plue of Redd in Yountville is in the running for the Outstanding Pastry Chef award.

Merry Edwards of Merry Edwards Wines in Sebastopol and John Shafer and Doug Shafer of Shafer Vineyards in Napa are among the five nominated for the Outstanding Wine and Spirits Professional award.

In the regional Best Chefs in America, the Pacific region (including California and Hawaii) features an all-Bay Area lineup: Jeremy Fox of Ubuntu in Napa, Douglas Keane of Cyrus in Healdsburg, Loretta Keller of Coco500 in San Francisco, David Kinch of Manresa in Los Gatos, and Daniel Patterson of Coi in San Francisco, completely shutting out our neighbors to the south and west.

BaconCamp

Click here for a full BaconCamp slideshow!

Inspired by last year's creative cooking competition and exhibition called CupcakeCamp and in solidarity with the growing popularity of events (see the recent Grilled Cheese Invitational), the first BaconCamp took place over the weekend. It was a well-organized and smoothly run event that simultaneously demonstrated just how much of a high bacon is currently on in terms of notoriety and how far people are able to stretch one culinary theme.

People were greeted at the door by free stickers and buttons with great slogans like "I'd kill a petite beagle for a bacon sandwich" and "If God didn't want us to eat bacon, why did he make it out of bacon?" People were also offered BLTs by Dr. Bacon, who wasn't an official contestant but just felt the swine spirit of the day.

Snacktion: Sanritsu's Couque D'Asses

Posted By on Mon, Mar 23, 2009 at 9:00 AM

011220091773.jpg

Name: Couque D'Asses

Brand: Sanritsu

Origin: Japan

Found at: Sunset Super

Cost: $2.59

Ingredients: Flour, chocolate, sugar, shortening, albumen, butter, corn syrup, milk, corn starch, egg, cocoa, salt, wine, lecithin, flavor

Calories per serving: 44

Why I bought it: 99% for the funny name and 1% craving for butter cookies filled with chocolate cream.

Tasting notes: Watch out, because they're so light and delicate that it's not humanly possible to eat just one. (They're tiny.) Also, could the inclusion of wine in the translation of the ingredients possibly be wrong? Where's the wine?

Would I buy it again? Yes, they're tasty.

What other blogs/sites thought of it: Bunnyfoot declares Couque D'Asses to be "hours of snacking entertainment."

"Let Them Eat Cake! Mondays" is a new gift/incentive offered to customers of the Mission Beach Café (198 Guerrero). Order any entree on a Monday night and receive a free piece of cake (white or dark angel food, carrot, or blackout) created by pastry chef Alan Carter (pictured, left, with executive chef Thomas Martinez). Carter's got a fairly tempting selection of sweets, including whole cakes and pies, the latter in flavors such as lemon velvet cream, huckleberry, sour cherry, and pumpkin hazelnut.

In this week's box:
  • carrots, 1 lb. 3 oz.
  • spinach, 8 oz.

  • rutabagas, 1 lb. 3 oz.

  • broccoli, 14 oz.

  • asparagus, 15 oz.

  • leeks, 1 lb.

  • kale, 13 oz.
The kale, leeks, spinach, and rutabagas went into a soup with sausages and beans. I used a simple, old-fashioned recipe for gingered carrots to go with brisket, potatoes, and cabbage.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
