The Week in SFoodie: Washbag, Foie Gras, Doughnuts, and Meat Sushi

We ate, drank, and dished decadently this week on SFoodie. Here are some of the tastiest bits, in case you were out to lunch:

• We tip our cap to the re-opening of North Beach legend Washington Street Bar and Grill (1707 Powell) as well as the return of its colorful regulars.

• Driving to the South Bay just got more enticing with the opening of Psycho Donuts (2006 S. Winchester Blvd.), an art gallery/eatery where the fried bits are a little nuts.

• As the controversy over foie gras rages on, local restaurant Incanto (1550 Church) weighs in on the topic and also demonstrates its own personal protest against wastefulness with its Head to Tail dinners.

• We located filet mignon sushi in Pacific Heights at Tataki (2815 California) and were unexpectedly delighted with its meaty goodness.

Wine Label War: EU vs. USA

Posted By on Fri, Mar 13, 2009 at 4:50 PM

European countries have been complaining for generations about the use of their place names, such as Burgundy and Champagne, for American wines. In Europe, only wines from a specific place can use its name, and even then often often only if the winemaker follows various other rules for the appellation.

Pursuant to a 2006 agreement between the U.S. and the E.U., the U.S. was to take steps to restrict use of the terms Burgundy, Chablis, Champagne, Chianti, Claret, Haut Sauterne, Hock, Madeira, Malaga, Marsala, Moselle, Port, Rhine, Sauterne, Sherry, Tokay, and retsina on American wine labels. However, the proposal had a gaping loophole: All labels approved prior to March 10, 2006, would be grandfathered in.

The E.U. recently chose not to extend a provision of that agreement allowing the use of the terms chateau, classic, clos, cream, crusted, crusting, fine, late bottled vintage, noble, ruby, superior, sur lie, tawny, vintage, and vintage character on labels of American wines, so those terms will not be permitted on wines imported to Europe after March 9, 2009. It's anyone's guess what percentage of the approximately $500 million worth of wines the U.S. exports to the E.U. annually will be affected, but most of that wine comes from California, so whatever pain ensues will be felt mostly here.

Breakfast at Tiffany's (2499 San Bruno) in the Portola neighborhood has been greeting San Francisco residents with their first meal of the day for 30 years. It's the type of spot you might have no idea exists if you don't live nearby, but is worth a journey from other points in the city.

Drink of the Week: Zaré at Fly Trap's Minted Memory

Posted By on Fri, Mar 13, 2009 at 9:00 AM

At Zaré at Fly Trap (606 Folsom), there are many reminiscences on growing up in Iran (since chef/owner Hoss Zaré and cocktail director Reza Esmaili both did). One especially addictive and dangerous one is the Minted Memory, made of Bombay gin, Pimm's No.1, minted vinegar syrup, and lemon. Minted vinegar is one of those ingredients that sounds strange but works well, cutting into the harshness of the gin in a pretty remarkable way. It's all as cool as the cucumber slice that floats in it, emiting a yummy fragrance and subtly flavoring the concoction.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
