Sweet Beat: Thorough Bread and Pastry's Chocolate Bread

Chocolate bread ($2.50) is a revelation at Thorough Bread and Pastry (248 Church), the retail bakery operated by the San Francisco Baking Institute. Thick, dark chocolate chips are scattered throughout the loaf and offer bursts of extra sweetness to something that wouldn't be supersweet without them. It tastes less decadent than cake or a brownie, but maybe that's because we didn't make a sandwich out of it (this time).

Psycho Donuts

It's quite a schlep from S.F., but doughnut fanatics may judge the trip worthwhile for the unique artistic creations at Psycho Donuts (2006 S Winchester Blvd, Campbell, two miles south of the Winchester Mystery House). The creative inventions at this new shop, which doubles as an art gallery, include the Psycho, topped with pretzels, lemon glaze, chocolate, and cayenne; and the FungShui, with green tea and chocolate. If you can't make it down there, check out psycho-donuts.com for more fun pictures.

CSA Adventures, Box 8

In Friday''s box:

  • 1 bag walnuts, 1/4 lb.
  • 1 celery root, 1 lb. 6 oz.
  • 1 bunch carrots, 1 lb. 1 oz.
  • 3 fresh onions, 1 lb. 2 oz.
  • 1 cabbage, 1 lb. 5 oz.
  • 1 bunch dino kale, 1 lb.
  • 1 bag spinach, 8 oz.
Most of the cabbage and carrots went into a batch of the Gujarati-style warm salad I posted the recipe for a few weeks back.

The celery root I'm saving for a batch of celeri remoulade, a classic French appetizer salad. There are two basic kinds of remoulade, one made with crème fraîche, the other with mayonnaise. I prefer the latter (and we can't get real, French, raw-milk crème fraîche around here any more anyway). It's almost too simple to bother with a recipe, but here goes:

Snacktion: Sconehenge's Honey Pecan English Tea Scones

Posted By on Mon, Mar 9, 2009 at 8:00 AM

021420092192.jpg

Name: Honey Pecan English Tea Scones

Brand: Sconehenge

Origin: Berkeley

Found at: Rainbow Grocery (1745 Folsom)

Cost: $4.20

Ingredients: Unbleached flour, buttermilk, butter, eggs, sugar, baking powder and salt

Calories per serving: Not listed

Why I bought it: There was virtually no coherent argument to be made in favor of leaving them on the shelf.

Tasting notes: It states on the package that these scones are made from an old(e) English monastery's recipe, and that people would line up for the treats. Small wonder why: They're buttery and addictive. I didn't even get a chance to see what one tastes like toasted because I snarfled them up quickly, right out of the bag.

Would I buy it again? Yes, and probably very soon.

What other blogs/sites thought of it: Yelpers' opinions, as always, vary drastically, from "roadkill" (as one unfortunately describes the food at Sconehenge's South Berkeley cafe at 2787 Shattuck) to "unmatched" (in a good way, and referring to the scones). I don't know about the other food, but Sconehenge has certainly mastered its namesake.

Date Night: Crab Feast at Bistro Boudin

datenightfoodie.jpg

Every Thursday in March, slap down a measly $25 to partake of one of the best deals going. At Thursday's Crab Feast at Bistro Boudin (160 Jefferson at Pier 43 1/2) you'll get a freshly steamed Dungeness crab with drawn lemon butter, a classic Caesar salad with homemade sourdough croutons and shaved Reggiano, and linguine with slow-roasted tomato arrabiata -- not to mention, of course, plenty of Boudin's trademark sourdough garlic and cheese bread. Carbtastic! As the menu reminds us, in the words of infamous local newspaperman Herb Caen: "Fresh-cracked Dungeness crab with Boudin's round 'dark bake' sourdough and a well-chilled bottle of California Chardonnay is still the quintessential San Francisco meal." Make reservations online or call 351-5561. Bistro Boudin is open Thursday-Monday, 11:45 a.m.-9 p.m.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
