Day Trip: Point Reyes

Point Reyes National Seashore is one of our area's great natural treasures. The park offers a diverse range of coastal terrains, including beaches, dunes, wetlands, streams, and forests, providing great opportunities for picnicking, hiking, bicycling, and horseback riding. It's also home to a wide variety of wildlife, from birds to elk to elephant seals to passing whales.

This being the Bay Area, there's also good food to be found. A fine place to pick up a picnic is Cowgirl Creamery / Tomales Bay Foods (80 4th St, Point Reyes Station, open Wednesday through Sunday). This little food court houses a cheese shop and an upscale deli with seasonal salads, sandwiches, and local charcuterie.

Thank Heaven's Dog for Buns

There's much to praise about Charles Phan's newest restaurant venture Heaven's Dog (1148 Mission). But if you want to go straight to the heart of it and don't have the time or means to carry out a full sit-down reservation, here's an idea: Belly up to the bar, lounge or adjacent noodle bar and order some pork belly buns or a veggie variety with crispy tofu and shiitake ($8).

These addictive morsels are a clear tribute to those served at the New York restaurant Momofuku, the great success which, if media reports are to be believed, was almost singlehandedly built on the back of buns.

Better Than:
Brewing a generic, borderline metallic-tasting tea bag in your cold, lonely apartment.

The Samovar Tea Lounge's Hayes Valley edition has been up and running since the end of 2008, but there's still no sign on the door to mark the establishment. With its dim lighting, the lounge easily blends into the rows of Victorians on Page Street -- an unobtrusive, almost  organic piece of the neighborhood to the casual eye. Which is exactly what owner Jesse Jacobs had in mind.

Sustainability and repurposing are central themes in Jacobs' ethos; evident in the beams from an old Petaluma vinegar factory that line the ceiling, the emission-free fireplace that sits in the back end of the space and the 20-foot, naturally fallen

redwood tree from Marin that serves as the tea bar.

Coffee, Toast and a Coconut: That's Trouble

Posted By on Thu, Mar 5, 2009 at 6:30 AM

The other day, while eating at Outerlands (4001 Judah), the curiously named Trouble Coffee stood out on the menu. As it turns out, not only is Trouble Coffee and Coconut Club (4033 Judah) on the same block, it's been open for a year and a half, selling one (and only one) incredibly unique breakfast of thickly sliced homemade cinnamon toast, coffee and a whole young coconut.

It's called Build Your Own Damn House ($7) and is an adventure in playing with your personal chemistry; the coconut water mellows the jitters and extends the duration of the caffeine buzz from the coffee, while the sugar in the toast draws an instant smile. All that's missing, really, is a little acid, but fortunately BYODH goes great with their new shot of sweet-tart fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice ($2.50), which for some reason they ask you to call Yoko. Oh no.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
