Around Town: Bloodhound

All that was old is new again at SOMA's newest watering hole, Bloodhound (1145 Folsom at Seventh St.). In the former Cassidy's space, the establishment has embraced the return of the handcrafted cocktail and extended that same ethos to every aspect of the bar, from the walls of century-old barn siding to the rocking chairs, custom-made chandeliers, and tables of raw redwood,. Taken together, Bloodhound has the cozy feel of a hunting lodge, complete with antlers, ancient Field and Stream adverts, and -- of course -- a jukebox and pool table.

Co-owner Mike Goebel says the theme wasn't predestined, but evolved during the renovation. "As things progressed, the space felt very 'lodgey,' like a warm hunting lodge, which we thought was very cool, so we ran with it but made very sure not to go over the top," he says. "My product isn't only a cold beer or a stiff cocktail; it is also the ambiance or vibe of the space that is so important, so I make sure to focus on that as well. To me, the feel is just as important as the drinks."

Speaking of stiff cocktails, Bloodhound pours a short list of honest-to-goodness drinks -- Goebel recommends the Bloodhound No. 1 (Hangar One vodka, Campari, and grapefruit) -- as well as a cultivated beer list heavy on the Belgian brews. Check out the drink list here. Happy hour runs Monday-Friday 4-7 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday noon-4 p.m. For more info, call 863-2840.

Costco Moment: Blue Hill Bay Whitefish Salad

Posted By on Tue, Feb 24, 2009 at 1:00 PM

Until this week, I had never eaten my fill of whitefish salad. At a deli or bagel shop you get a little dish or tub with, what? maybe half or three-quarters of a cup of the stuff? Even if I don't have to split that with anybody, by the time it's gone, I'm just getting warmed up.

Costco (450 10th St) to the rescue: the other day, I spotted this two-pound tub of Blue Hill Bay whitefish salad ($7.99). The Parve stamp and Brooklyn address seemed promising, as did the ingredient list: just smoked whitefish and mayo, plus dashes of potassium sorbate and nisin (benign preservatives).

And it was good: I put away about a pound. Once was probably enough for that kind of pigout; normally I'd expect a tub to last a few weeks, or to feed a crowd at a brunch or potluck. Now if only we had some real bagels around here.

Roll Play: Pistachio Avocado Roll at Rumble Fish

The pistachio avocado roll ($5) at Rumble Fish (200 23rd Ave.) is a lively alternative to plain avocado rolls, which are a staple of any veggie sushi enthusiast's diet but can be a little bit boring. The nuts are crushed and rolled both inside and outside, so the flavor really comes through in every bite. In addition to the usual seafood suspects, this cute little bistro in the Richmond District also makes a cashew avocado roll (and, for carnivores who want to stay on land, an amazing beef carpaccio). Strangely enough, the restaurant also sports a poster for The Godfather on the wall, giving off a cute gangster vibe.

Humphry Slocombe's Foie-Gras Ice Cream Sandwich

Posted By on Tue, Feb 24, 2009 at 8:01 AM

humphreyslocombefoie.jpg
Humphry Slocombe (2790 Harrison), as reported by Tamara Palmer in December, makes some very unusual ice creams. Undoubtedly the most eccentric flavor is foie gras, which the shop pairs with housemade ginger snaps to make ice cream sandwiches ($4).

Even tasting the ice cream by itself, I can't say I was able to detect any foie. If I hadn't known it was there, I probably would have guessed brown butter and salted caramel. It was a nice little tidbit, but for the price, next time I'd get ice cream instead.

Actually, I did get some ice cream, too, and was very impressed with the intense flavors, minimal sugar, and free hand with salt, particularly in the pineapple five spice and rhw balsamic caramel. To my taste, this is the best of the new wave of artisanal ice cream shops, which also include Bi-Rite Creamery in SF and Ici and Sketch in Berkeley. I was particularly pleased with the wide variation in texture among HS's ice creams, which ranged from sticky-dense to mousse-like (just like at my favorite gelateria in Rome), and with how they were served at just the right temperature for eating, neither icy nor melting too quickly.

Comments have been disabled on this post. If you have an opinion to share about foie gras, please see last week's Village Voice article, "Is Foie Gras Torture?" and post a comment there.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
