CSA Adventures, Box 5

In this week's box:

  • 2 rutabagas (1-3/4 lbs.)
  • 2 celery roots (2 lbs.)

  • 5 potatoes (1-1/5 lbs.)

  • 4 oranges (2-1/2 lbs.)

  • 1 bunch carrots (1 lb.)

  • 1 bunch kale (1/2 lb.)
  • 2 leeks
  • washed spinach (1/2 lb.)

Friday evening, at the box drop-off site, another subscriber was raving about a simple recipe for rutabaga, butternut squash (we had some left from last week), leek, and carrot soup that appeared in the Full Belly newsletter last year, so we tried it. You just chop everything roughly (she insisted that you don't even have to peel the rutabagas or carrots), simmer in broth, and purée with a wand blender. Unfortunately, the only broth we had on hand was some Trader Joe's soy-ginger broth, which made the dish too sweet. We saved that with a splash of Austrian roasted pumpkinseed oil, which has a strong, nutty flavor that balanced the slightly cloying soup. (I'll post about that oil later in the week.)

The next night, the other rutabaga, a celery root, and some of the potatoes went into a shepherd's pie. We also ate the spinach, lightly sautéed and tossed with Mornay sauce.

Snacktion: Bhooja King's Murkoo

bhooja_king.jpg

Name: Murkoo

Brand: Bhooja King

Origin: Hayward

Found at: Rainbow Grocery (1745 Folsom)

Cost: $3.59

Ingredients: Pea flour, rice flour, ajawin, sesame seeds, oil, chile, salt and spices

Calories per serving: Not listed

Why I bought it: It was a combination of wanting to learn what murkoo is (a deep-fried Indian snack crisp that looks like crinkle-cut fries) and supporting a local business (always an added bonus).

Tasting notes: While not excessively hot, the chili lingers long afterward, and they're a bit too crunchy for my liking.

Would I buy it again? No, but some of their other snack mixes look tempting, from fried spicy chana to a special

Indian-Fijian mix of dried peas and rice crackers.

What other blogs/sites thought of it: East Bay Express is a fan, and published a story that describes the murkoo-making process at Bhooja King.

2009 Tre Bicchieri Tasting, March 4th

trebicchieri2009.jpg
The biggest Italian wine tasting of the year will take place at Fort Mason's Herbst Pavilion on March 4. This mega-tasting features 112 producers pouring wines that have been awarded the top tre bicchieri (three glasses) rating in the 2009 edition of the Italian wine magazine Gambero Rosso's annual wine guide.

These giant tastings remind me of a friend's joke that ménage à trois is French for "one too many," except with the Tre Bicchieri tasting it's more like one hundred too many. With so many booths, some of them pouring several wines, it's impossible to taste everything. At some point, your palate is shot. Nevertheless, this is a rare chance to taste a lot of great wines that you won't often see sold by the glass, if at all. It's best to do your homework so you know what you want to taste, and to get there before the doors open at 4:30pm, since some of the most popular wines may run out.

Tickets are $50 and must be purchased in advance. The price includes a copy of the forthcoming Italian Wines 2009, which lists for $40. Producers participating in San Francisco include:

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
