Prelude to the Grilled Cheese Invitational

Saturday, February 21 from noon to 5 p.m. has been set as the date and time for the second annual Northern California regional competition of the Grilled Cheese Invitational, which began in Los Angeles six years ago. Truth be told, it's not a true invitational since anyone may register a sandwich on the site and compete on the 21st, so if this sparks any cheesy inspiration, be sure to sign up. The categories are the same as they have been previously: The Missionary Position (classic grilled cheese), the Honey Pot (dessert grilled cheese) and the Kama Sutra (anything goes). The fest is also currently looking for volunteers.

We braved long lines and even questionable ingredient combinations during the inaugural event in Oakland in October 2007 and still managed to have a lot of fun, so we plan to be there on the scene to bring you a taste of this follow-up contest, taking place at a yet-to-be-announced San Francisco location.

Chef Mani Niall, who's done everything culinary from being Michael Jackson's private chef (really) to operating his own eponymous bakery on Fairfax in Los Angeles, will be discussing his new cookbook, Sweet! From Agave Nectar to Turbinado, Home Baking With Every Kind of Natural Sweetener, on February 13th at 7 p.m. at Red Hill Books at 401 Cortland Avenue (648-5331).

Yes, just in time for Valentine's Day! Come and get in the mood. You can bake up some sweet treats, or just get a copy of the book inscribed for your beloved.

Niall, currently Executive Chef at Just Desserts in Oakland, will be serving up some of his tempting baked goods, as well as his highly-touted naturally sweetened hot chocolate.

In this week's box:

  • 2 bok choy (3-1/2 lbs.)
  • 3 oranges (1-3/4 lbs.)
  • 1 butternut squash (2-3/4 lbs.)
  • 1 bunch kale (3/4 lb.)
  • 1 bag washed spinach (1/2 lb.)
  • 3 fresh onions
  • 1 bunch carrots (1-1/4 lbs.)

I love butternut squash not just for its excellent flavor (among other things, it makes the best "pumpkin" pie) but because it's fast and easy to prep compared with some of the bumpier winter squashes. Here's how I do it:

SubCulture Dining by the Dissident Chef presents Bloody Valentines, holiday dinners taking place on Saturday and Sunday (February 14-15) in an undisclosed San Francisco location. While the specific menu is under wraps, the Dissident Chef (a 25-plus year culinary vet) always prepares a selection of the uncommon and creative (we've even previously written about the porn-like quality of these menus).

The dinner costs $175 (plus $4.38 processing fee) per person; secure reservations online.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
