Valentine's Sweet Hearts

Self-respecting San Francisco residents should know that the words "Russell Stover" and "Whitman's Sampler" really have nothing to do with real chocolate, but many might be able to use some guidelines beyond that for Valentine's Day. Fortunately, we have some of the country's finest chocolatiers in the area, and they're sufficiently armed for their favorite holiday.

Charles Chocolates in Emeryville (6529 Hollis) offers several heart-shaped boxes for V-Day, but we're craving the heck out of the nuts, pralines and caramel assortment ($34). The box features distinctive pieces from imagineer Chuck Siegel, including his incomparable peanut butterflies, Poire William caramels and his refreshing marzipan--enticing even for folks who don't necessarily enjoy marzipan.

Among the holiday specials from Recchiuti (1 Ferry Bldg.) is this charming Valentine Motif Box ($26). It's easy to find Valentine's chocolates that look cute, but much harder to locate ones that have more than visual appeal. These actually taste better than they look, with dark chocolate enrobed over Michael Recchiuti's signature burnt caramel ganache.

Celebrate tech geek love with a visit to the beta store of TCHO (Pier 17), the brainchild of Wired founder Louis Rossetto and former NASA software developer Timothy Childs. We recommend picking up a box of their new "Chocolatey" hearts ($9), made with the single-origin dark creation of the same name. TCHO also has several enticing Valentine's options, including some very cute tins with lovey quotables from Shakespeare, Naruda and Browning, among others.

Sushi Without Guilt: Fish Stories at Red Hill Books

Posted By on Thu, Feb 5, 2009 at 8:44 AM

Casson Tenor, author of Sustainable Sushi: A Guide to Saving the Oceans One Bite at a Time, will be discussing the politics of sushi and, incidentally, signing his book at Red Hill Books (401 Cortland Avenue, 648-5331) on Monday, February 16 at 6:30 p.m. Tenor, a marine ecology activist, will share travel tales ranging from visiting the famed fish warehouses of Tokyo's Tsukiji district to fishing with holy men on the island of Yap. Learn about mercury and PCB levels, overfishing, and species extinction. You'll never look at a California roll in quite the same way again. But if we want to continue downing uni and toro, we have to learn how to sustain them. Knowledge is power!

Serious Bread: Liguria Bakery

Posted By on Thu, Feb 5, 2009 at 8:00 AM

liguria1.jpg
Liguria Bakery (1700 Stockton at Filbert, 421-3786) has thrived for almost 90 years by doing a single thing very well: they make focaccia. Period.

They sell ten different kinds--plain ($4 a sheet), with your choice of eight different toppings ($4 to $4.50), and frozen bake-at-home ($3)--but nothing else (except perhaps the occasional raffle ticket to benefit local schools).

The focaccia is baked fresh every morning. If you get there early, the bread is still warm, and you can join the afficionados devouring it on the streets nearby, or on the benches in nearby Washington Square Park. If you get there late, you're likely to find they've sold out and closed early.

Hours:

Monday-Friday, 8am-2pm
Saturday, 7am-2pm
Sunday, 7am-noon

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
