Darkness and Dawn in the Local Food Scene

(We will dearly miss Scharffen Berger, due to depart the Bay Area soon)

Today, Eater SF summarizes a grim start to the year for the local food scene. "The Shutter" lists 25 different restaurants that closed in January alone in San Francisco, and one additional spot in the South Bay. Perhaps worst of all is the news that Scharffen Berger and Joseph Schmidt will be leaving the Bay Area sooner rather than later, as SFGate sadly reported last week. However, Eater also meticulously tracks the openings of bars, lounges, clubs, restaurants and other food-centric hotspots, and currently lists more than a dozen new businesses that were open as of the second half of January. With more on the way, a new dawn has already begun.

Global Pantry: Wattleseed

Posted By on Mon, Feb 2, 2009 at 4:00 PM

wattleseed.jpg
I first encountered wattleseed, gathered from various types of acacia that grow wild in the Australian bush, at South Food + Wine Bar (330 Townsend). They grind it with hazelnuts, sesame, pistachios, cumin, coriander, pepperberry, akudjura (bush tomato), and salt to make a savory dip for oil-soaked bread. With all that going on, I couldn't guess which notes were coming from the wattleseed, so I was curious to taste it by itself. My interest was further piqued when I read that the flavor is similar to a mix of coffee, chocolate, and roasted hazelnuts.

Since none of the spice shops I checked with carried it, I finally ordered some from South's online store. With shipping, this came to $13.21 for 15 grams--about a tablespoon. After reading various recipes online, including an Emeril Lagasse ice cream, I decided that a panna cotta would probably be a good and easy way to maximize the flavor.

Update in response to an email: I copied that photo from South's online store. The "best before" date on the package I bought was 25 Nov 2009.

Free Grand Slam Breakfast Tomorrow at Denny's

As announced during yesterday's Super Bowl, Denny's is offering a free Grand Slam breakfast tomorrow (February 3) from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., available at all locations. Since the Denny's in Japantown left the chain last year and became the dubiously named New Danny's (1700 Post), I wondered if there were any remaining franchises left in San Francisco.

Well, as Denny's aficionados doubtless already know, there are still locations downtown (816 Mission) and in Fisherman's Wharf (495 Beach) as well as one in the Serramonte Shopping Center in Daly City and another in South San Francisco (2220 Westborough).

From Tuesday through Friday of this week, Oliveto (5655 College, Oakland, across the street from Rockridge BART) celebrates all things porky with its annual Whole Hog dinners. As suggested by the name, the menu features almost every part of the pig, including ham, shoulder, belly, head, trotter, skin, ears, liver, heart, brain, tripe, kidneys, lard, blood, and spleen (milza in Italian), as well some wild boar. There are still reservations available, though Thursday and Friday are almost booked up. Most of the dishes will still be available on Saturday.

Here's the tentative menu:

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
