Belmont's Golden Star Tea Company brews and mildly ferments its organic White Jasmine Sparkling Tea for a nonalcoholic beverage that tastes like a well-dressed cousin of Champagne that had us returning for multiple samples. Look for it at San Francisco Whole Foods locations.

Bay Area Bites from the Fancy Food Show: Silver Moon Desserts

Silver Moon Desserts infuses liqueur into its line of ice cream and sorbet flavors. We were knocked out by the Pomegranate Martini and Mango Mimosa. Both were light, delicate, and full of flavor, without overpowering the palate with alcohol. Silver Moon is served by various Bay Area restaurants. The company, based in Los Gatos, hoped to find some San Francisco-based retail partners at the Fancy Food Show, so keep an eye out for it on local shelves. But, for now, we might just have to make a special stop for it next time we're in the South Bay, where it's carried at Zanotto's Family Market (1988 Naglee Ave., San Jose) and Gene's Fine Foods (18850 Cox Ave., in Saratoga).

Bay Area Bites from the Fancy Food Show: CJ's Bitz

There are many chocolate-pretzel combinations on the market, but CJ's Stix of Novato takes it to the next level with the addition of chunks of perfectly salted toffee. CJ's Bitz, the bite-sized version of the Stix, are dangerous. Case in point: This writer has consumed nearly a whole box of the peanut-butter-filled version during the composition of this post. Find them at the Rincon Market (98 Howard), Gifted Basket (236 8th St.), Farm Fresh to You (1 Ferry Bldg.), Blue Fog Market (2567 Gough St.), and Boudin Bakery locations.

Michael Bauer Watch: A Load of Tripe

Posted By on Fri, Jan 23, 2009 at 12:37 PM

In his blog today, SF Chronicle restaurant critic Michael Bauer gives his answer to the question, "Can you tell me some restaurants that serve tripe?" At least MB appreciates that tripe can be good food, so full points for that -- but, no surprise, all seven of his recommendations are for relatively expensive Italian or Cal-cuisine restaurants. How can you start a serious discussion of this topic without mentioning Mexican and Sichuan places?

Town Hall (342 Howard) just announced its 2009 Mardi Gras party, to be held Tuesday, February 24. A friend who went last time says, "Another all-you-can-eat event that was really good. The chefs are from N'awlins and the shrimp are big!" Tickets are $45 in advance, $55 at the door if it doesn't sell out in advance. (Click the image for a larger, more readable version.)

Tasty Lamb for Less: S.F.'s Halal Butchers

Posted By on Fri, Jan 23, 2009 at 10:56 AM

lamb_rib_roast.jpg
It's an open secret that halal markets offer some of the tastiest meat around, often at prices lower than you'll find even at Costco. I've learned from talking with the butchers that the animals are often grass-fed and come from farms in the Central Valley. Lambs and goats are brought in whole, and most of the innards are available.

This week I bought a 2.5-pound bone-in lamb rib roast for $10. I told the butcher, who didn't speak much English, to leave it whole. He took it over to the bandsaw anyway, and thinking he intended to slice it into chops, I called out to him to stop. I took the roast home, rubbed it with two tablespoons of ras el-hanout (recipe follows) mixed with two teaspoons of salt, wrapped it in plastic, let it sit in the fridge for a few hours, roasted it at 350 degrees to an internal temperature of 145 degrees, wrapped it loosely in foil to hold the heat, and let it sit for ten minutes before serving.

Looking for Free Booze?

Posted By on Fri, Jan 23, 2009 at 9:14 AM

When myopenbar.com started several years ago, the Web site and its weekly e-mail newsletter were something of a guerrilla operation, sharing information on open-bar events around New York City with people who weren't invited by the hosts. As the number of subscribers grew and the service expanded to other cities, liquor companies started using it as a marketing tool to reach the sought-after but ad-resistant 20s and 30s demographic, creating open-bar promotions specifically for the list. Or so I read in The New York Times.

It might be the post-holiday slump, but in the several weeks I've been following our local branch, sf.myopenbar.com, I've seen only a few genuinely free drinks on offer, and most of those had some hoops to jump through. The list does, however, publicize a lot of happy hours, openings, and other events with drinks for $1-$2. One correction, though: Takara Sake's tasting room recently instituted a $5 charge.

Drink of The Week: Nettie's Louisiana Lemonade

Nettie's Crab Shack (2032 Union) has a simple yet energizing cocktail with its Louisiana Lemonade. Just a measure of quality, tart lemonade and a zing of Absolute Peppar vodka is enough to pop eyes open. A languid taste of the Deep South in a glass? Yes, please.

Day Trip: Ahlgren Vineyard & Castle Rock State Park

Posted By on Fri, Jan 23, 2009 at 3:22 AM

ahlgren_tasting_room.jpg
Ahlgren Vineyard, one of the best wineries in the Santa Cruz Mountains, is a classic small family operation. Its cellar is simply the cellar of the Ahlgrens' house, and the tasting room is (as you can see on the left side of the photo) just a table in the corner.

Ahlgren is probably best known for one of America's

best Semillons, made from old-vines Livermore Valley fruit. In a blind

tasting of the 2005 vintage, you could easily mistake the aromatic, concentrated, balanced

wine for French. Ahlgren also makes excelent Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Syrah.

The winery's tasting room is open only on Saturdays from noon to 4pm. The winery is about 60 miles from SF, in a sparsely populated area a

few miles north of Boulder Creek. As long as you're schlepping all the way

down there, you should also visit the area's major tourist attraction,

Castle Rock State Park.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
