Snacktion: Spicy Mixed Nut Chikki

Posted By on Tue, Sep 30, 2008 at 9:00 AM

Name: Spicy Mixed Nut Chikki

Brand: Spice Vice

Origin: Mission District, San Francisco

Found at: Miette Confiserie, 449 Octavia (at Hayes). (I also tried to buy it at Rainbow Grocery and either forgot to pack it up, or lost it in transit, oops.)

Cost: $3.50

Ingredients: Organic whole almonds, organic whole cashews, organic whole pistachios, organic sugar, jaggery, organic Strauss clarified butter (ghee), organic spices and salt.

Calories per Serving: Not listed, which I take to mean in my twisted world that it is calorie-free!

Why I Bought It: I love the mix of spicy and sweet in general and am attracted to organic products, plus I am actively looking to feature locally made Snacktion.

Tasting Notes: It looks small but is definitely rich enough to share or save for a second serving. The sugar and the jaggery ensure that this is mega-sweet, but the nuts cut into that and even it out. While there's a pleasant lift that lingers, it wouldn't be too spicy for those with a low tolerance for heat. The confectionary expert on duty at Miette confirmed its addictiveness by confessing that she had perhaps tasted more than her share of the chikki samples (and that Spice Vice creator Shalini Bhalla is a treasured former Miette intern).

Would I Buy It Again? Yes, and probably this week at that!

What other blogs/sites thought of it: I have yet to see anyone else pick up on this treat, but LA's Fig and Honey loves the Spice Vice turmeric cake.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
