A new study has put to bed the long-believed stereotype that female porn stars are "damaged goods," that they come from backgrounds of abuse, and have poor self-images.

According to recently released findings in the Journal of Sex Research, porn stars have higher self-esteem, are more spiritual, and feel better about their bodies than women not in the adult industry.

Om Shan Tea describes itself on its website as "An urban tea oasis where fine teas, organic foods, and cultural events are offered to inspire healing, conscious community, and holistic wellness." However, in light of recent legal issues, this oasis is currently in jeopardy.

Oshan Cook, founder and owner of the tea house, was found guilty on November 1 of distribution of psychedelics, which includes a minimum sentence of 10 years in prison.

Comedian and rapper Katt Williams was arrested Wednesday night for assaulting a man outside of an Oakland hotel. Williams, who is in town for a stand-up appearance at the Oracle Arena on Friday, allegedly hit an 18-year-old Berkeley man over the head with a beer bottle. According to the San Jose Mercury News, Williams has not been booked into jail, and was cooperative when the cops took him in for questioning.

This is, by far, not the first time Williams has had run-ins with the law. The comedian, probably best known for his role as Money Mike in Ice Cube's Friday After Next, has previously joked in his stand-up routines that he's been arrested 14 times in a three year period.

Transverse: Healthy SF Removes Restrictions on Transgender Care

Posted By on Fri, Nov 9, 2012 at 7:30 AM

Next week is Trans Awareness Week, which is a kind of funny name -- one that presumably is meant to emphasize visibility as opposed to say, pride, and to draw attention to the myriad of barriers of health and happiness, large and small, that face trans folks -- and to appeal to our allies and potential allies to work with us to defeat them.

But the name.

Two S.F. Entrepreneurs to Be Honored by Martha Stewart

Posted By on Thu, Oct 11, 2012 at 12:30 PM

We never needed a reason to be hopelessly in love with Martha Stewart. The crafts! The recipes! The hair! But we'll throw a bone to those of you who aren't already on the Martha S. bandwagon (made with recycled milk crates and decorated with autumn leaves). This Fall, Martha will be honoring two of San Francisco's most inspiring entrepreneurs: Flora Grub Gardens and Cup4Cup in her first annual celebration of lifestyle entrepreneurs.

The Mother of all D.I.Y. is launching "American Made" -- a celebration of artists, artisans, and entrepreneurs around the country. This multi-media program will honor 15 businesses who are changing the face of food, furniture, gardening, crafts, and design, with a huge spread in the November issue of Martha Stewart Living.

Susan G. Komen Rejects Fundraising Efforts from Porn Site

Posted By on Tue, Oct 9, 2012 at 12:49 PM

By Anna Westendorf

Earlier this week, Internet porn site, Pornhub, announced the launch of its "Save the Boobs" campaign: In observation of breast cancer awareness month, it would be donating one cent to Susan G. Komen for the Cure for every 30 videos viewed from the tit-specific categories on its website. According to the current counter on the website (which is obviously NSFW), over 22 million videos have been viewed so far, bringing the total for the first week alone to approximately $7,333. It would be perfectly reasonable to anticipate a rapid uptick in that number once the general public becomes more aware of campaign -- whack off to support breast cancer research? That's right up a slacktivist's alley!

Bookstore Hero Wanted: Two San Francisco Stores in Trouble

Posted By on Fri, Oct 5, 2012 at 10:48 AM

As purveyors of print and worshipers of the written word, we are one voice adding to many in the conversation regarding the survival of the physical book, and by proxy, physical bookstores. The discussion has been going on since the Internet reared its ugly, yet hypnotically fascinating head. As bookstore after bookstore joins the ranks of closed businesses across the country and reader after reader bows down to praise the e-reader, the talk of the sustainability and survival of print has grown from a concerned murmur to a frenzied outcry. Never is the seeming trend more apparent than when a local icon is threatened. Not one, but two San Francisco bookstores are facing the possibility of closing their doors due to languishing book sales and outrageous rent increases.

Site Records All the Casual Homophobia on Twitter, Depresses Us Immensely

Posted By on Fri, Sep 28, 2012 at 10:58 AM

nohomophobes.jpg

If you want to depress yourself on this rainy Friday, we'd suggest you visit the new website, nohomophobes.com, which chronicles the horrific and prolific use of homophobia that exists on social media websites.

A barrage of casually cruel tweets rushes swiftly by each moment on the site, which was created by the University of Alberta's Institute for Sexual Minority Studies and Services (iSMSS). According to the press release, the website is supposed to serve as a "social mirror" that captures and documents the amount of homophobic language that occurs every moment of every day. Since July 5, "Faggot" has been tweeted 2.4 million times, "So Gay" 800,000 times, "No Homo" 800,000 times and "Dyke" 300,000 times.

The Purple Onion Comedy Club Closes Its Doors

Posted By on Thu, Sep 27, 2012 at 10:41 AM

po.jpg

The Purple Onion, an intimate comedy nightclub in North Beach that had been around for almost 60 years, shuttered its doors on Monday, Sept. 24, but not without going out with a chorus of laughter and applause. A bevy of comedians hit the Purple Onion's stage one last time to pay homage to one of S.F.'s famed comedy landmarks. One such performer was Marga Gomez, who said, "The Purple Onion wasn't just a San Francisco comedy landmark it was an incubator for the rebellious and quirky comic spirit beyond our city. Fortunately we have a new wave of venues and independent producers in the Bay Area who continue to plant little purple onion seeds all over the Bay Area."

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
