  • Juanita MORE!

Welcome to I AM YOUR QUEEN, a Pride Month series on the Exhibitionist that looks at the people who pull the wig down from the shelf/ suddenly they're this punk rock star of stage and screen.

Every year on Pride Sunday, Juanita MORE! throws a little party that lasts for 10 hours, envelops the entire Tenderloin, and does a world of good. This year, the beneficiary is Y.E.S. (the Youth Empowerment Summit). In contrast to people who parachute into altruism secretly hoping to raise their own profile, MORE! is heavily involved with the organization.

"I taught a class on drag at Gay-Straight Alliance Network's Youth Empowerment Summit," MORE! told SF Weekly. "The most asked question was 'Can I get a hug?'"

I AM YOUR QUEEN: Sandra O. Noshi Di'n't

Welcome to I AM YOUR QUEEN, a Pride Month series on the Exhibitionist about San Francisco's most iconic drag superstars, the second-tier queens who plot coups d'etat to dethrone them, and the gender performers who scream "Living!" every time you accuse them of belonging to one camp or the other.

Somewhat ironically, Sandra O. Noshi Di'n't found sobriety through drag.

"I’m assuming that drag queens have a reputation for having a good time and partying, because I can’t tell you how many times people come up to me at bars and clubs, looking to score 'party favors,'" she said. "When I was adopted by my drag mother, Pollo Del Mar — who is openly sober — I learned that I had a choice to not drink and use. I've been sober since November 1, 2010."

That is genuinely impressive, and we applaud her decision. Noshi Di'n't kindly spoke to SF Weekly about playing shows in Modesto, inheriting her mother's cheekbones, and the mysterious death of her first husband, Mr. Noshi.

I AM YOUR QUEEN: Dina Isis

DINA ISIS

Welcome to I AM YOUR QUEEN, a Pride Month series on the Exhibitionist that bribes the staff in San Francisco's queenly households to gain access to the royal medicine cabinet, the contents of which we then use as blackmail to get these haughty bitches to talk to us.

After the Mother Star Search this year, Dina Isis stayed at her boyfriend’s house.

"I arrived in full drag, wig-less, covered in dried-up fake blood — a common theme for me — and exhausted, and only then did I realize that I had no clothes to wear the next day other than what was on me. When I left in the morning, in a borrowed T-shirt, gym shorts, and my red pumps, I smiled and said to myself, 'I’m so happy this is my life.'"

Indeed! Dina Isis graciously spoke to SF Weekly about the non-importance of following the rules, the travails of men's heels, and how her theater background came about because her parents were too frugal to hire a babysitter.

I AM YOUR QUEEN: Holotta Tymes

HOLOTTA TYMES
  • Holotta Tymes

Welcome to I AM YOUR QUEEN, a Pride Month series on the Exhibitionist that endears itself to the power-fems who secretly orchestrate global affairs from a bunker deep beneath Aunt Charlie's.

When Holotta Tymes first went to Finocchio's to work, even though she had already made her living in drag, she knew she had made it.

"Finocchio's, world-famous for the finest of female impersonators for 63 years, closed in 1999. It was a show that many strived to be cast in," Tymes told SF Weekly. "I remember how excited I was. The showroom was dated but under the darkness of the candlelit tables, it was magical. The first time I worked there, it still had a live band, and the show was both live and lip-synch. So many famous female impersonators/drag artists had worked there and now so was I!"

The dressing rooms were technically in another building, "through an alley way, up a flight of stairs, in what was a Old Victorian apartment."

"Many of the rooms were turned into the dressing rooms, some divided, including what had been the kitchen at one time," Tymes said. "I remember being nervous and getting unpacked and set up for my debut, doing my makeup, getting dressed, and coiffed. Just before curtain, as I stood in an evening gown dressed to the nines, covered in rhinestones and jewels, I realized I had to pee."

She'd already had a tour of the entire dressing area, but still no idea where the bathroom was.

"I ran back through the alley, up the stairs and ran around looking for the facilities," she said. "There was one door I had not been through, but I had no idea where it went. I opened it to find an old porch, with a bunch of discarded items on the end, and used doors screwed together to make walls around a slab of cement with a old toilet in the center, and a single light bulb hanging with a pull string. I ran in, slammed the door, and I stood on the filthy, urine-stained floor almost in the dark, realizing I had made it! I was using the official 'outhouse for the performing arts.' I stood peeing where the likes of Charles Pierce had!"

I AM YOUR QUEEN: Honey Mahogany

HONEY MAHOGANY
  • Honey Mahogany

Welcome to I AM YOUR QUEEN, a Pride Month series on the Exhibitionist that look at the foundation of drag, be it a pillar of strength or a tube of powder marked "Honey."

Honey Mahogany is a former social worker who grew up to become so glamorous that her music was used on Looking, and she might just be playing Uhura in a drag re-enactment of Star Trek later this year. (If Nichelle Nichols should happen to drop in, it might lead to a wormhole or an alternate timeline.) She graciously spoke to SF Weekly about her background, why she performs, and how exactly she got that name.

MUTHACHUCKA
  • MuthaChucka

Welcome to I AM YOUR QUEEN, a Pride Month series on the Exhibitionist that introduces San Francisco's drag royalty to their loyal subjects.

MuthaChucka's greatest drag moment happened a few months ago at Honey Mahogany’s show at the Midnight Sun.

"I started performing my first number and this little black woman came running up to the stage jumping up and down and shouting, 'That’s my song! That’s my song!' Being the consummate professional that I am, I continued to perform the number as I realized the little black woman was Sharon Jones of Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, and the song I was performing, 'Stranger to My Happiness' was indeed her latest single.

"We hung out and took photos after. I have been performing her songs for years ('100 Days, 100 Nights' is one of my favorite numbers of all time!) and it was thrilling to be able to do one of her songs for her."

I AM YOUR QUEEN: Crissy Fields

Welcome to I AM YOUR QUEEN, a Pride Month series on the Exhibitionist that talks to the drag queens who buy up everything cute and force the rest of us to fight over startup-branded fleeces and other fashion scraps.

Her days of castrating bulls long behind her, the inimitable Texan Crissy Fields simply refuses to act her age and has been seen pole-dancing at clubs and urging the girls to have one more. She recently returned from riding in the AIDS LifeCycle (see her Red Dress Day pic above) to resume her day job as an educator and her night job as the keymistress to the demimonde. SF Weekly caught up with her while she was mixing Ro-Tel into some Velveeta in the crock pot, spraying on some volumizer as she stirred, about to go kick up her dogs and watch her stories on Netflix.

DAFT-NEE GESUNDHEIT
  • Daft-nee Gesundheit

Welcome to I AM YOUR QUEEN, a Pride Month series on the Exhibitionist that looks at every last cranny of the drag rainbow, especially the ones who look really good in infrared and ultraviolet.

The versatile Daft-nee Gesuntheit is a classic female impersonator (it helps to be thin) who is currently starring as the uptight Charlotte York in Sex and the City: LIVE! at Oasis. Unfortunately, she doesn't get to smooch Kyle MacLachlan like the Kristin Davis did, but she nonetheless took time out of her hectic schedule to chat with SF Weekly about the realness continuum, her history of female roles, and what her boss' mouse pad looks like.

I AM YOUR QUEEN: Martha T. Lipton (the failed actress)

Welcome to I AM YOUR QUEEN, a Pride month series about strange little boys who grew up to be fabulous, powerful women.

While peers such as Meryl Streep, Patricia Clarkson, and even Gates McFadden have gone onto successful careers, Martha T. Lipton (the failed actress) remains mired somewhere toward the the lower tiers of stardom. The recently divorced Fresno native isn't hard up for work, however, and occasionally finds time out of her busy schedule to instruct the proletariat in the arts of towel-folding. She graciously spoke to SF Weekly about her work.

I AM YOUR QUEEN: Sister Tuna

DUSTI CUNNINGHAM
  • Dusti Cunningham

Welcome to I AM YOUR QUEEN, a Pride month series on the Exhibitionist that stands on the corner of Folsom and 11th and just interviews whoever.

Sister Tuna Noodle Cocktail has been a nun, sworn to uphold her vows of irreverence and hedonism, for nearly a decade. Even by the furry standards of the order, her dense black beard is particularly luxurious. Deeper than the cosmos and full of more secrets than any mean girl's hair, it's a recognizable beacon of decadence at clubs and street fairs.

Since becoming a fully professed nun (sponsored by Sister Hellen Wheels of the Daughters of the Divine Eruption), Sister Tuna has become particularly adept at getting in and out of face quickly. Her trick to looking effortlessly glam?

"Eyeliner and lashes fix everything," she told SF Weekly. "And when it all goes to hell, stage blood works, too. And the oldie but goodie 'It'll be dark, they'll be drunk.'"

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
