Transcendent Ep. 3 Recap: Bionka Wants a Mercedes Between Her Legs

Posted By on Thu, Oct 15, 2015 at 3:30 PM

Picking up right where Transcendent episode 2 left off, the ladies of AsiaSF are considering adding a male revue to broaden the club’s reach. Bambiana does not seem to approve of the idea in concept, and a bit of tension breaks out between her and Bionka when the latter blurts out that she’d like to fuck the male dancers. It’s not the only quibble over the club’s lineup of performers, as Nya discloses to L.A. that her audition didn’t go well, but that Nya pulled a few strings to get L.A. another shot.

Although L.A.’s employment at AsiaSF initially seemed like a foregone conclusion, we see her internalizing some basic lessons about performing.

“You have to be sure you’re winking sexy, cause you could wink ugly,” Nya tells her.

Other than that, it’s a Bionka-heavy episode all-around, as things so south with Bambiana on the one hand and she seems to have made up her mind that she’s ready for gender reassignment surgery.

“It’s time,” she tells Nya over brunch at Chez Maman, waving at biker dudes through the window. The cost? Some $30,000-$40,000, or “like a fucking Jag," Bionka says. (She may or may not call it “Princess Mercedes.”)

Honey Mahogany, S.F. drag queen (and, most recently, Uhura in Oasis’ Star Trek Live) makes a cameo appearance, chatting with Bionka on her birthday. Bionka doesn’t reveal her age, of course, but clearly it’s a factor in her decision to undergo bottom surgery.

Meanwhile, the discomfort between Bionka and Bambiana deepens when they recount the stripper audition and Bambiana wants “to see a nine or a ten, not a seven.” When Bionka assumes she mean inches and not hotness on the one-to-10 scale, the rift widens. An attempted reconciliation on a park bench shows Bionka deploying body language that is nothing short of priceless: She couldn’t recoil more strongly from Bambiana’s accusations, making it obvious that this estrangement will be long-lasting.

Cutting Room Casualty
Xristina is barely in this episode at all.

Best exchange
Bambiana: [shows Nya a pic of her from a dating app].
Nya: “That’s cute!”
Bambiana: “Is it too slutty?”
Nya: “A little.”

Backstory Hour
Bionka’s friend and makeup client Aimee asked her about the origins of the Bionka persona, which turned into a regrettably all-too-common tale of getting kicked out at age 16 for expressing her gender identity. Bambiana also reveals to Nya that she and Bionka have known one another for far longer than their work at the club, but doesn’t elaborate.

Performance Time
Bionka puts on a highly stylized, Marlene-Dietrich-in-a-tux outfir (complete with cane and tiny top hat). It’s a definite highlight.

Deleted scene intrigue
Over brunch at Café Flore, a friend of Bambiana’s named Steven presses Nya about how she claims not to feel objectified or like a circus fact performing at AsiaSF.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
