Start Your Holiday Shopping: Renegade Craft Fair is This Weekend

Posted By on Wed, Nov 5, 2014 at 1:33 PM

You wouldn't think we'd get excited about a craft fair, but this one is the exception to the rule; actually, it's an exception to craft fairs. While the term "craft fair" may conjure up images of a church hall with knitted tissue boxes, this one is full of vibrant letterpress posters, handmade furniture, small-patch perfumes, unique jewelry, and much more. The 300-plus vendors are selected by the Renegade team, and each item is handmade or produced by small, independent businesses. We've been doing most of our holiday shopping at this craft fair for the last few years — where else are you going to find Christmas cards featuring the Golden Gate Bridge covered in snow?

The Cash Cab Is Coming to San Francisco: Uber's cashPOOL

If you watched Cash Cab, the "There are 13,000 cabs in New York City, but there's only one that pays you!" game show, you probably always wished Ben Bradley would have come to San Francisco before they went off the air in 2012. But you're in luck! Uber is hosting a Cash Cab-like experience — tonight!

For those of you unfamiliar with the show, unsuspecting passengers would hail a cab, and once inside the ceiling would turn into something that resembled a disco-floor, and the host of the show (Bradley), who was also the driver, would ask general knowledge questions. For every question the players got right, they earned cash, but if they answered three wrong they were kicked to the curb — literally, he made the passengers get out wherever they were in Manhattan.

Tonight's cashPOOL goes like this: open your Uber app in San Francisco anytime between 4-7 p.m., and choose uberPOOL, enter your destination and request a ride. You might receive a regular UberPOOL ride, or you might be greeted by an Uber Quizmaster, where he or she will test you with trivia for a chance to win up to $500!

I swear the producers of Masterchef have stylists on board that help contestants have more “zip,” sort of like what Miracle Whip does to a sandwich, amirite?!

The kids for this current incarnation of Masterchef Junior are all adorable and of course precocious, but they also wear jaunty little bowties and bedazzled headbands. Surely they have spent all of their time with their noses buried in cookbooks and not Vogue.

This is one of my favorite shows on TV. It has the magic formula that every reality show must have: competition, assholes, charismatic hosts, and dramatic music to build excitement. Since this is the “junior” version there are no assholes, but everything else is in place, including a rich-hue filter over the camera that imbues everything with LSD trails of loveliness. Joe Bastianich the grump is even smiling from scene to scene.

The hills are alive, I tell you!

Originally named the Tranny Fest, the San Francisco Transgender Film Festival has been sharing films since 1997— providing a platform for transgender and gender-variant filmmakers. And this year's festival will take places at the Roxie Theater on November 7-9.

The transgender community has seen many changes since the film festival debuted 17 years ago, changes in the entertainment industry include trans actress Lavern Cox received an Emmy nomination and made the cover of Time for her groundbreaking work in Orange Is the New Black and Chaz Bono's emergence as a celebrity in his own right. Yet, many trans identified filmmakers can still face insurmountable odds in getting their work seen, which makes the Transgender Film Festival a valuable resource.

Festival Artistic Director Shawna Virago  talks to SF Weekly about the festival and its importance to the community.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
