“Mission Blue” may or may not be the name of some artisanal cheese on sale for ten bucks an ounce at Salumeria, but it definitely is the name of the marine-conservation nonprofit founded by oceanography rock star Sylvia Earle. And it’s the title of a new documentary about her life and work, available today on Netflix.

What is the Future of the Castro? Talking with Amin Ghaziani, Author of “There Goes the Gayborhood”

Posted By on Fri, Aug 15, 2014 at 3:58 PM

Are gay neighborhoods dying? There’s been ceaseless chatter the past couple of years that the Castro is turning straight, and that San Francisco’s unaffordability is making it almost impossible for new generations of young LGBT people to keep the torch lit. But until now, no one had attempted a comprehensive look at just how things might be changing.

Amin Ghaziani is a sociologist and the author of There Goes the Gayborhood (Princeton University Press), a steely glance at North America’s most prominent pink ghettos and the demographic transitions they’re undergoing. In anticipation of his appearance at The Green Arcade (1680 Market St.) this Sunday, Aug. 17 at 6 p.m. to talk about his book, SF Weekly had the opportunity to chat with Ghaziani about the Castro’s forthcoming rainbow crosswalks, the importance of gayborhoods to non-residents, and whether Oakland is charting the future of these enclaves.

This conversation has been condensed and lightly edited.

The Exhikittenist: CatTown, Cat Pics and More

Posted By on Fri, Aug 15, 2014 at 8:11 AM

It’s that time of the year again: the fog has rolled in, the smell of fresh pencils and crisp Muni exhaust is in the air, the Giants are doing some sports thing, Kanye West was in town and one of our favorite holidays just happened: World Cat Day. Ah, to celebrate another year of the unfriendly, leach-like creatures we let live in our house and depress our self-esteem with a blitz of GIFs, interviews, breaking news, and more cowtowing to our feline demons and deities.

This group of cat pics posted in celebration of the occasion is more depressing than we anticipated. Why do so many people feel like they were stuck with cats after break-ups. What would you rather have, lifelong companionship, a warm body, and an understanding partner, or a boyfriend?

Sophie Smith has the longest cat hair in the world, at 10 inches. Selfishly, she has not commented on the possibility of donating it to a charity like Locks of Love, or Pantene Beautiful Lengths. Snuggles Butt Le Lee is a cat name, even though everyone objected when we wanted to name our cat Mithrandir, after Gandalf’s Sindarin name. Racists. These gifs “honor our feline rulers.” Teach your cat how to hack your neighbor’s wifi. A compelling resolution to humanity’s greatest debate. Free bitch cat available from the Stanismeowsky School of Acting.

Ever since the rise in popularity of Cat Cafes in Asia and Europe, the demand to consume hot dirty water in the same building where cats shit has risen in America. Two separate cafes are poised to open in the Bay Area in the coming year, CatTown Cafe in Oakland and KitTea in Hayes Valley. Both ventures will have cafe-style areas with a separate cat zone. All cats will be available for adoption, which is the primary mission of both cafes. We spoke to Ann Dunn, who helms CatTown and is co-founding the CatTown Cafe with Adam Myatt.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
