Green Apple Books Wins Bookstore of the Year Award

Posted By on Wed, Apr 2, 2014 at 12:00 PM

Known for its frequent events, labyrinth-esque layout, squeaky wooden floors, and wide selection of both new and used books, Green Apple Books has been one of the Richmond District's most beloved independent bookstores for 47 years. And last week, Publishers Weekly announced that Green Apple Books is this year's recipient of their annual Bookstore of the Year award.

In its winner announcement, Publishers Weekly commended Green Apple for its active participation within the literary community, which includes founding the San Francisco Locally Owned Merchants Association and spearheading California Bookstore Day. This book holiday debuts on May 3 at 93 different independent bookstores throughout California.

Inspired by the popular event Record Store Day, CBD events will feature guest speakers, exclusive books for sale, and of course, food. The CBD event at Green Apple will include a storytelling workshop, live music, and a chance to get a bookmark handmade by Wendy MacNaughton, the author and illustrator of Meanwhile in San Francisco , a book we told you about a couple of weeks ago.

The other finalists for the Bookstore of the Year award were bookstores from all over the U.S., predominantly in the Midwest. And out of these 18 nominations, the winner is right here in San Francisco. How cool is that?

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
