Big Bad Wolf: Crime and Punishment in the Trailer Park

Originally titled Huff, Paul Morrell's violent new psycho-thriller comes out on DVD today as Big Bad Wolf. The credits claim that the story was inspired by The Three Little Pigs. Though there are thematic similarities between the film and the children's nursery rhyme, Big Bad Wolf is closer in tone to a crime thriller, with elements of slasher classics like Halloween and Friday the 13th added for good measure.

The film's title, and it's marketing campaign misled some to assume that Big Bad Wolf is a werewolf movie. It is not.

Charlie O'Connell, a likable actor best known for his work in lighter fare, gets to show off his acting chops in this movie. As Huff, the stepfather from hell, he screams, laughs maniacally, and kills one person after another (sometimes after torturing them) with a rage-filled glee that's genuinely frightening. O'Connell is superb, and may have opened up his career to all new possibilities with this performance.

The Bachelor, Juan Pablo, Episode Diez: Not a Ladies Man

Juan Pablo: Jackass pinata - WIKIPEDIA.ORG

  • Juan Pablo: Jackass pinata

When Juan Pablo lay in his bed at night in the weeks prior to beginning his "journey" as the new Bachelor (they always call it that), visions of NBA cheerleaders bouncing down tropical beaches must've filled his head. In his fantasy, he is surrounded by gasping women who pine for his manhood, laugh at all his jokes, and desperately cling to him, nipples erect, as they bungee off cliffs. Perhaps he practiced several self-effacing yet sexy poses for People in front of the mirror. And Juan Pablo knows he can dance; could Dancing With The Stars be that far off?!

His fall from grace, then, must've been muy muy shitty, because The Bachelor: The Women Tell All was basically two hours of bashing every facet of his personalidad like a pinata. When it was over, the stage was littered with accusations: He's not smart, he's self-centered, he uses his daughter as a prop to avoid intimacy, he's mean, and he never intended to propose to anyone.

When he came out to face the gauntlet at the end of the show, you could see it all over his face: This is not what I expected would happen. All his life, surely, he has been the charming, handsome, athletic Latin lover who never loses. Watching it was very satisfying. I don't know what they call this sort of thing in Spanish, but the Germans have a word for it: Schadenfreude. Finally a Bachelor is fake enough that even the plastic contestants can't take it.

Mission Hero Chata Gutierrez to be Remembered: Fundraising for Mural Underway

THE CHATA MURAL PROJECT
  • The Chata Mural Project

The legacy of the late Chata Gutierrez, radio personality and salsa DJ on KPOO and KPFA, remains in the forefront for Mission District locals.

Gutierrez, who died after a 12-year battle with liver cancer in December 2013, was an inspiration of strength and cultural pride for Latinos and Latinas. Born and raised in the Mission District, for more than 40 years she gifted listeners of KPOO her radio show, "Con Clave", which was the winner of SF Weekly's Best Salsa Radio Show in 2000. The Chata Mural Project aims to showcase Gutierrez's cultivation of heritage through an honorary mural by Carlos Kookie Gonzalez -- and the proposed location: The Mission.

Gonzalez, who is also a Mission native, originally painted the mural as artwork for a poster used in a 2009 fundraising campaign to support the ill Gutierrez. Now Gonzalez, along with supporters of the Chata Mural Project, ask the community to support them as they plan to turn the artwork into a long lasting mural. In total, they need $25,000 for supplies and permits.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
